Are your brows out of control? Thick, bushy brows were once in style, but neat and beautifully shaped brows can highlight the eyes and create a refined look. There are many solutions to fix thick eyebrows, several of which are doable at home. Before you start waxing or depilating them with tweezers, be well informed.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Decide on the Shape You Want to Give Your Eyebrows
Step 1. Determine which shape best fits your face
Consider what you currently like and what you don't like about the shape of your brows. Mirror yourself, take a picture and compare them to the brows you really like.
- Square faces can be enhanced by thick brows with high arches. This shape can soften the features and does not require a lot of trimming or thinning.
- Round faces can be enhanced by eyebrows with elevated arches. This requires a precise hair removal with tweezers, but it will help to at least partially attenuate the roundness of the face.
- Flat eyebrows with a low arch look best on those with long faces. They can open the face sideways, rather than emphasizing it vertically.
- Eyebrows with a rounded arch are well suited to those with a heart-shaped face. Oval faces look good with any shape, since they are the most symmetrical ones.
Step 2. Decide if you want to fix your eyebrows at home or at the beautician
Both methods have benefits, but you need to consider factors such as experience, time, and cost. If a friend offers to do this job, consider if she's an expert and if you can put your trust in her.
If you have never shaped your eyebrows, the first time you should go to a professional to fix them. Sure, it will cost you more than doing it at home, but you can count on her experience. You might also ask her for maintenance tips, so you can touch them up at home
Step 3. Decide how you would like to arrange your brows
Will you depilate them with tweezers? Will you be waxing? Will you use the thread method? If you have decided to go to the beautician, choose a salon and find out about the costs for the treatment. Before making an appointment, ask well and answer your doubts.
- Don't forget that arranging your eyebrows at home comes with costs. You may need to buy a special comb, wax and applicators, floss or tweezers. Be prepared and try to have all the necessary supplies on hand before starting.
- Waxing is ideal for removing very fine hair or hair that covers large areas. It can be a good first step to fix thick brows. After waxing, you can make touch-ups with tweezers or floss to give your eyebrows a defined shape.
Part 2 of 3: Waxing the Eyebrows
Step 1. Comb your eyebrows using an eyebrow comb
You have to comb the hair upwards, following the natural shape. This allows you to highlight the longer hairs than the natural hairline, which must be trimmed.
Step 2. Mark the eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil
You need to outline the shape you would like to have. This way, it's easier to figure out where to shave them with tweezers, wax or floss. If you prefer a seagull wing shape, use a pencil to mark where the eyebrow should start, where it should end and the highest point of the arch.
Step 3. Apply wax or depilatory strips to your brows
The hair should be at least 3mm in length: if it is shorter, the wax will not be able to pull it out. Press the depilatory strips along the direction of hair growth.
Step 4. Tear off the wax
Use a sharp motion to pull it in the opposite direction of hair growth. Avoid pulling it slowly - it can be painful, and you won't be removing a lot of hair.
Step 5. Gently clean and moisturize the area you have shaved
You can use a hydrocortisone cream to soothe irritation and inflammation or apply an aloe vera-based lotion.
If you have some wax residue to clean, try using baby oil or petroleum jelly
Part 3 of 3: Shaving with Tweezers and Managing Thick Eyebrows
Step 1. Numb the eyebrow area with ice cubes one minute before plucking out the hair with tweezers
Keep ice or a frozen bag on your eyebrow until the cold sensation no longer bother you. In this way, the hair removal will be painless.
Step 2. Tear off the hairs individually with tweezers
Tweezers with a diagonal edge pull out the hair easily. Use firm, quick movements to pull the hair up and out. Start by plucking under the eyebrow. When removing the top hairs, try not to pluck too many from the bow.
- From time to time, step away from the mirror to check the work. If you are just starting out, try to proceed with caution and don't pluck your eyebrows too much.
- Tweezer hair removal takes longer than waxing, but offers greater precision. If you have to define the shape of your eyebrows practically from scratch, be sure to wax them first, then pluck them with tweezers and create the desired shape.
Step 3. Thin out thick, unkempt eyebrows
Have you combed your brows up and out with a special comb or toothbrush? Then take a pair of scissors and cut the hair that is longer or that would prevent you from having a harmonious result. Try not to make a clean cut so that you don't end up with a completely even layer of hair. Avoid ticking too much; in fact, you may unintentionally overdo it and it will take some time for the hair to grow back.
- You can also pluck your brows directly with tweezers. To make them thinner, remove one or two hairs from various parts of the eyebrow, trying not to remove too many at one time. The idea is to reduce the overall amount of hair while maintaining a good balance regarding shape.
- If you are hesitant when you need to trim, thin or define your brows, or are short on time, try to mask their thickness. Take a thin make-up brush and carefully apply foundation by tapping lightly. Start by applying it lightly to the part of the eyebrow closest to the nose, then work towards the outside.
Step 4. Apply clear brow gel
After combing them to get the desired shape, this product fixes them. You do not have it? Spray some hairspray on an old toothbrush and use it to comb them.
Advice
- If you are interested in the thread method, consult a beautician. This procedure requires a lot of dexterity and experience, so you shouldn't try it at home without the right training.
- If you've decided to go to a professional, ask around for recommendations.
- Avoid plucking your eyebrows with a razor. This can cause ingrown hairs, not to mention that as they grow back they will be hard, similar to a short beard. Plus, you risk eliminating too many of them.
