Cloud slime is a unique slime variant, characterized by a soft texture, similar to that of kinetic sand. The key ingredient is a substance called "instant snow". However, if you can't find it, you can use shredded polystyrene or the absorbent powder found on the inside of the diapers. In case you want to create a fluffy cloud slime, then to get this result all you have to do is add some shaving foam to the base prepared with the glue!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Make a Simple Cloud Slime
Step 1. Pour 120ml of white vinyl glue into a bowl
Most bottles of vinyl glue hold around 120ml of the product, which is exactly the amount you need! Do not use clear vinyl glue, otherwise the final effect will not remind you of the typical texture of clouds.
- While most recipes call for the use of water to make slime, in this case it is not necessary to add it at all.
- For a more distinctive slime, add 1-2 drops of blue food coloring during preparation.
Step 2. Add 60ml of liquid starch
Liquid starch has the function of activating the slime and you can find it in the detergent department of many supermarkets. You can also use a different activator, such as 1 tablespoon of saline or 120ml of borax water.
- If you use saline, make sure it contains boric acid and sodium borate. Before proceeding, you will also need to add about 3g of baking soda to the glue.
- To make borax water, mix 2g of borax with 120ml of warm water.
- Borax can also be found in the detergent section of the supermarket.
Step 3. Mix the starch with the slime, then add more if it feels too sticky to the touch
Combine the starch with the slime well, stirring with a spoon. If the mixture is too sticky or viscous, add one tablespoon of starch at a time until you get the desired consistency.
- Set the slime aside while you make instant snow.
- Do not add more than 60ml of liquid starch. If you use more, the slime will become hard and chewy.
- If the slime is still too stringy, wait 3 to 5 minutes. This way, the ingredients will have enough time to bond.
Step 4. Make ½ cup (about 150g) of instant snow following the instructions
Buy a jar of instant snow online or at an art supplies store (usually easier to find around Christmas time). Read the instructions on the package to determine how much powder and water you should use, then mix the ingredients.
- Instant snow is not the same as spray snow or artificial snowflakes that are sold in bags.
- If you can't find it, pour some water into a diaper and wait for it to expand, then cut it open to remove the instant snow.
- Alternatively, using your hands or a grater, crush enough white Styrofoam to fill about ½ cup. Try to get flakes that are as fine as possible.
Step 5. Once the instant snow is made, mix it with the slime
Pour the instant snow over the slime, then fold the edges of the mixture over it. Knead the slime to incorporate the snow. Start with about 80g of snow, then add more if you like.
- As more snow is added, the slime will become more and more compact.
- If the slime is still too sticky after kneading it, add a few drops of liquid starch.
- If you have any instant snow left over, let it dry first, then return it to the jar.
Step 6. Store the slime in a plastic container when you stop playing with it
The shelf life of the slime depends on the ingredients used to make it. If you've used instant snow or absorbent nappy powder, the texture may change after a few days. If you used crushed Styrofoam, the slime should maintain its original consistency for at least a week.
Instant snow dries up after a couple of hours / days. Since it has already been mixed with the slime, it will hardly dry out completely, but the mixture may harden a little
Method 2 of 2: Make a Fluffy Cloud Slime
Step 1. Pour 630ml of vinyl glue into a bowl
If you can, use the white one, as it will allow you to remember the color of the clouds more. Clear vinyl glue is a good alternative. Adding shaving cream will help dull the slime.
For a more distinctive slime, add 2 or 3 drops of blue food coloring
Step 2. Combine 500ml of white shaving foam with the glue
Measure the shaving cream and pour it into the bowl. Then, mix it gently together with the glue using a rubber spatula. Make sure you use real shaving cream instead of a gel product, otherwise the slime won't get fluffy.
- Shaving cream would be the best product to use, as it is more cloud-like in color.
- Hair removal foam for women often has a pink or purplish hue, which is not very reminiscent of clouds. Avoid this product, unless you really want to get a pink or purplish effect!
Step 3. Add 150ml of liquid starch to the glue
Combine the starch with the glue by adding 1 tablespoon at a time until you get the desired consistency. Stir the slime well every time you add the starch.
- Set the slime aside while you make instant snow. This will also give the slime more time to acquire a less sticky texture.
- If your goal is simply to make fluffy slime, then you're done! Adding instant snow or crushed polystyrene will help enrich its texture, but nothing more.
- In most supermarkets, liquid starch can be found in the detergent section.
Step 4. Make 100g of instant snow following the instructions on the jar
Buy a can of instant snow. You can find it online or in an art supplies store during the holiday season. Read the instructions on the back of the package to understand how to prepare it, then measure 100g.
- Instant snow is different from spray snow or artificial snowflakes sold in bags.
- If you can't find instant snow, pour water into a diaper and wait for it to expand. Cut the diaper and remove the snow. The result will be almost identical!
- Alternatively, crush white Styrofoam with your fingers or a grater until you get a fine powder. Use enough to get about 100g.
Step 5. Knead the instant snow with slime
If the snow is lumpy, first mash it with your fingers. Measure out about 100g of instant snow, then add it to the slime. Fold the edges of the mixture over the snow and knead everything together.
Let any remaining snow dry and return it to the jar
Step 6. Place the slime in an airtight container when you stop playing with it
Since it contains shaving cream, it will begin to lose its texture after a couple of hours or days. Afterwards, it may continue to have a viscous and foamy texture, but it will no longer be as soft as it used to be.
Slime made with polystyrene tends to keep its consistency much longer than slime made with instant snow. This happens because instant snow dries up over time
Advice
- Make a scented cloud slime by adding 1 or 2 drops of an essential oil or candy flavor.
- Instant snow expands to over 100 times its size, so a small amount is enough to get a good result. It may be easier to make a small amount and then measure the dose you need.
- If you've used too much activator and the slime has gotten too chewy, add 1 tablespoon of water to the mixture until it's viscous again.
- Instead of adding food coloring to the glue, try mixing it with the water you use to make instant snow!
- Instant snow is made from sodium polyacrylate. It's the same powder used to make super absorbent nappies!
- You can add instant powder snow to slime without activating it. Add 1 teaspoon at a time while still dry until you get the desired consistency.
- If the slime isn't stretchy enough, you can add lotion.
- By adding more shaving cream, the slime will become softer and softer.
