In Windows 10, when you set up a profile picture of your user account, the photo you choose is displayed on the login screen, within the "Start" menu, and elsewhere in the Windows interface. If you don't want to have a profile picture, you will have to replace the current one with something else, for example with the default image (a stylized silhouette). After replacing the current profile picture with a new one, you can delete it. This article explains how to restore the default profile picture of a Windows 10 user account and delete the one used previously.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Set the Default User Profile Image
Step 1. Click on the "Start" menu icon
By default it is located in the lower left corner of the desktop.
Step 2. Click on the user profile icon
It should be characterized by the image you have currently selected and is located in the upper left of the "Start" menu.
Step 3. Click on the Change Account Settings option
Step 4. Click the Select One button
It is located in the "Create your image" section. The "Open" system window will appear.
Step 5. Navigate to the "C:
ProgramData / Microsoft / User Account Pictures This is the folder where you will find the Windows 10 default profile picture. Follow these instructions:
- Select the following text with the mouse: C: / ProgramData / Microsoft / User Account Pictures;
- Press the key combination Ctrl + C to copy it to the system clipboard;
- Click with the mouse on the address bar visible at the top of the "Open" window where the path of the current workbook is displayed. The text in the bar will be selected automatically and will appear highlighted in blue;
- Press the key combination Ctrl + V to paste the text you copied earlier;
- Press the Enter key.
Step 6. Select the user-p.webp" /> and click on the button Choose image.
You can select any file whose name contains the word "user". This will replace the current profile picture with the selected one.
The old profile photo will still be visible within the account settings page. If you need to completely erase it from your computer, read on
Step 7. Press the key combination ⊞ Win + E to open the system "File Explorer" window
You can now delete your old profile picture directly using the "File Explorer" dialog.
Step 8. Paste the% appdata% / Microsoft / Windows / AccountPictures path into the address bar of the "File Explorer" window to access the "User Account Pictures" folder
Step 9. Press the Enter key
A list of all user profile pictures you have used will be displayed.
Step 10. Select the photo (s) you want to delete
To make a multiple selection, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the photos you want to include in the selection.
Step 11. Press the Delete key on your keyboard
The selected photos will be deleted from the account.
If you are logged in to Windows with your Microsoft account, the old profile picture may still be visible in some places on the interface (for example when you log in on other computers running Windows 10). In this case, read on to find out how to fix the problem
Method 2 of 2: Delete the Profile Picture from a Microsoft Account
Step 1. Launch the Windows Settings app by clicking on the icon
It is located at the bottom left of the "Start" menu.
If your Windows 10 local account is linked to Microsoft's profile and you don't want your old picture to appear online or elsewhere, follow the instructions in this method to fix the problem
Step 2. Click the Account icon
It features a stylized human silhouette.
Step 3. Click the Manage my Microsoft account link
It is placed below the current profile picture.
Step 4. Log in with your Microsoft account
If you haven't already, you will need to log in with your account. Use the same credentials (username and password) you use to log in to Windows.
Step 5. Click on the current profile picture
It is located in the upper left corner of the page. An enlarged version of the current profile photo will be displayed.
Step 6. Click the Delete link
It is located in the lower right corner of the page. A confirmation message will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Step 7. Click the Yes button
At this point your old profile picture will no longer be associated with the account.
