This article explains how to properly remove a SIM from any iPhone model. The card is located inside a special compartment that you can eject from the iPhone using the special tool supplied with the phone (or the pointed part of a paper clip). Once the compartment is open, it is easy to remove the SIM from its housing and insert a new one.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: iPhone 4 and Later (Including all X models)
Step 1. Hold the iPhone straight, with the screen facing you
- Use this method to remove the SIM card from an iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 8 (all models), iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone SE, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and 5s, iPhone 4s and iPhone 4.
- This method also works for all iPad models except 4th generation, 3rd generation and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, where the SIM compartment is on the left side instead of the right side.
Step 2. Locate the SIM compartment on the right side of the iPhone
You'll see it in the center of the right side on iPhone 8 and earlier, as well as on the iPhone XS Max, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. If you have an iPhone XR or iPhone 11, it will be closer to the lower right corner instead.
Step 3. Insert a straightened paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole in the compartment
You should easily notice the hole in the bottom of the compartment. Gently push the tool in to eject the SIM.
Step 4. Pull the compartment out and remove the SIM
You should be able to lift it easily. If you want to insert a new one, pay attention to the orientation of the current one before removing it. This way, you will be able to insert the new card correctly.
Some iPhone X and 11 models have space for two NANO SIM cards. If your compartment allows for two SIMs, be sure to remove the one you no longer need. Generally they can be recognized by the name of the operator shown on the card
Step 5. Insert the new SIM (optional) and replace the compartment
The board will only fit in the right way, due to the shape. If you find that you need to force the card into place, it is probably upside down or backwards. The compartment itself should fit into the device effortlessly.
Method 2 of 2: Original and Earlier 3GS
Step 1. Hold the iPhone straight, with the screen facing you
Use this method to remove the SIM from an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and original iPhone
Step 2. Find the SIM compartment on the top side of the iPhone
You will see it in the center of the top side, next to the Power button.
Step 3. Insert a straightened paper clip or the SIM eject tool into the hole in the compartment, which is on the left side
Gently press the tool and the card will pop out of the phone.
Step 4. Pull the compartment out and remove the SIM
You should be able to lift it easily. If you want to insert a new one, pay attention to the orientation of the current one before removing it. This way you will be able to insert the new card correctly.
Step 5. Insert the new SIM (optional) and replace the compartment
The board will only fit in one way due to the shaping. If you find that you need to force the card into place, it is probably upside down or backwards. The compartment itself should fit into the device effortlessly.
