What would a bookmark be without the traditional tassel that allows you to find it between the pages? If you want to add tassel to a bookmark you made yourself, or if your favorite bookmark has broken, you can make your own in minutes, with string or twine.
Steps
Step 1. Work with a large ruler or a piece of stiff card stock (such as those from cereal boxes)
Cut it the appropriate thickness, about 4 cm. You can change the length of the cream by making this object thicker or narrower.
If in doubt, start with a larger piece than you want. You can always shorten it later
Step 2. Wrap the thread, twine or string several times around the ruler or card
The number of turns, in addition to the thickness of the yarn, will determine the thickness of the tassel.
Step 3. Cut the end of the thread, then cut a second piece of about 90 cm or more
Fold it in half.
Step 4. Pull the folded end of the second thread under the turns of the first
There should be no need to use a needle. You should have a short loop on one side and two long tails on the other.
Step 5. Pull the long tails through the short loop
Step 6. Tighten this knot tightly by pulling the two long ends
Then slide the tassel off the ruler or card.
Step 7. Thread both loose ends through a large needle
Step 8. Double the two loose ends, leaving a ring of about 10 cm
Step 9. Push the needle through the top of the tassel and out the side
Step 10. Wrap the loose ends several times around the tassel, a little lower than the first knot
Wrap them tightly and try to form even loops that lead to a small round ball.
Step 11. Push the needle down through the center of these loops from top to bottom
Step 12. Pull the two long tails all the way down and tighten the knot tightly
Step 13. Cut the bottom of the rings created earlier
Step 14. Cut the garments to an even length
Step 15. Insert the tassel into the bookmark, threading the ring through the hole
Step 16. Pull the tassel through the loop ends, and pull gently
Step 17. Enjoy your new tassel
Advice
- This is a very simple tassel, which includes extra rings to act as a bookmark.
- For an added touch, thread the rings of the finished tassel through a bead or two before placing it in the bookmark.
- Crochet cotton will hold with a simple knot like this, but if you think your yarn is too slippery, create a couple more knots before running the yarn through the center of the tassel. Or, apply a drop of glue to fix everything.
- Do you need a bookmark to go with your tassel? Cut out a colorful greeting card or postcard into strips. Make strips about 4 cm wide and about 15 cm long. Use a letter opener if possible and try to center the cut on an interesting part of the image. Or, use any piece of cardstock around this size and decorate it with stickers. Use a hole punch to drill a hole on one side.
