Coyotes are members of the canine family and are often found in wild areas. Although cartoons often describe them as pets to be cuddled, these are actually wild animals that need to be treated with respect. Follow this guide to safely avoid a confrontation with a coyote.

Method 1 of 3: If the Coyote is Close
Step 1. Watch the coyote as I slowly turn back
Keep looking him in the eye. Coyotes are usually afraid of people and will therefore not attack you.
Step 2. Try to intimidate him
You can do this by holding a backpack over your head or opening your vest.
Step 3. Shout to scare him
Keep making noise.
Step 4. Throw stones or driftwood at him to scare him
Method 2 of 3: If You Encounter a Coyote Group
Coyotes often move around in groups so be careful.
Step 1. Don't go near a group of coyotes
Give them their space
Step 2. Don't stare at them and don't try to scare them
Step 3. Many coyotes avoid contact with humans, so follow the instructions above and make a lot of noise

Method 3 of 3: If the Coyote is Away
Step 1. Be careful if you have children or pets
Animals attract coyotes.
Advice
- If a coyote bites, go to the doctor right away!
- Do not keep food in the tent or you will attract wild animals. Hang food from trees or keep it away from the campsite. This also applies to items that give off a strong odor, such as toothpaste, deodorant, and soap.
- If you are camping with an animal, put it in a safe place from which it cannot escape. It may attract wild animals such as coyotes.
- If you have a flashlight, use it to distract them.
- To scare a coyote, make a lot of noise.
- It is important to keep looking a coyote in the eye, if you look away it will attack you.
Warnings
- Never run away in the presence of a coyote. It runs faster than you.
- Never let your child interact with a coyote!
- Coyotes often attack humans to protect their young. Don't go near a coyote cub.
- Never feed a coyote. It is illegal to feed wild animals in many states which may bite you while you do so.
