Balloons are an inexpensive and colorful way to make decorations for any occasion. The only limit is your creative energy and the strength to tie knots! We will start with the choice of balloons and then we will give you lots of original ideas on how to use them to decorate. To get started go to Step 1.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: The basic concepts
Step 1. Consider the color scheme
There are colorful balloons of many colors. You can choose between all the colors of the rainbow or between two colors. Do you want to create a sparkling effect in sparkling wine? Or the colors of a fire? How many colors will you need?
Step 2. Choose whether to use Mylar or latex balloons
Mylar is ideal for the outdoors - it is a material that creases to the touch (it is usually made of different shapes and with writings or drawings); latex balloons burst more easily, especially outdoors and if there are children. In any case, this type of balloons is more versatile and easier to use.
In the following section, we will mainly talk about latex balloons. Those in Mylar are less suitable
Step 3. Think about how many rooms you want to decorate and their size
The larger and sparsely decorated the place, the more balloons you will need. Latex balloons are inexpensive and will cost you even less if you inflate them yourself. How many do you want to put? Few, or so many that guests will be overwhelmed? Always take a little more than you think you will need, so you will be more comfortable.
Step 4. Choose between helium or normal air inflated balloons
If you want you can only use helium-free balloons, they are cheaper and easier to use. But if you want to be able to choose from the wide range of balloons available, you will have to use the helium ones.
You can buy the balloons already inflated in a specialized shop or buy a helium inflation kit. If you have a lot of balloons to use, you should choose the second option
Part 2 of 2: Be Creative
Step 1. Think about the various ways you can hang the balloons
Whether you choose helium balloons or not, don't leave them all floating on the ceiling or bouncing off the floor. There are many creative solutions you can take:
-
Helium balloons:
- Tie some threads at the end and attach them to nails in the garden
- Tie some threads at the end and attach them to a ribbon that starts from the floor to form a wall.
-
Helium-free balloons:
- Attach balloons of different sizes to the wall, as if they were bubbles.
- Place a marble or coin inside the balloon, attach a string and hang it from the ceiling.
Step 2. Make up shapes
You can choose different types of balloons and combine them to create strange figures. Here are some ideas:
- Make a bow. With helium balloons and wires it's easy.
- Create some flowers. Four balloons of the same color will be the petals; a different colored balloon placed in the center will be the corolla.
- Create streamers. Take a needle, thread and tie the balloons together to form your own special streamer.
Step 3. Decorate the balloons
You can even decorate them during the party - it's a lot of fun! With a few artist tools you can turn balloons into canvases for your masterpieces.
- Two words: glue and glitter. If you have a jar of glue you can dip the balloons and fill them with glitter.
- Use permanent markers to decorate the balloons. What do you think about drawing your friends' faces?
- Use some paint or felt or anything you can find that gives it an artistic touch.
Step 4. Fill them with something and then inflate them
We are not thinking about water balloon fights, although they are undoubtedly great fun.
- Fill them with water, but then freeze them. They will keep your drinks cool and be very decorative.
- You can also fill them with LED lights, especially if the party is in the evening.
- You can also fill them with seeds.
Step 5. In addition to being decorative, balloons can also be useful
If someone asks you why your house is full of balloons tell them that it is because they are useful. Here are some ideas:
- You can also use them as place cards! Inflate them with helium, tie them to a thread and secure them on the chairs. At the end of the party guests can take them home.
- You can collect them all together and stick them behind a closed door. When the birthday boy arrives you can shower him with a lot of balloons.
- Use them to create something! Work with papier mache or molds to create a vase or lampshade.
Advice
- Use a permanent marker to draw faces on the balloons.
- If it is difficult to find Mylar balloons in only one color, choose balloons that go well with the theme of the party
- Check that whoever inflates the balloons is doing it well, that there are no holes or that they are not too inflated.
- If you need a lot of them, get them in time.
Warnings
- Balloons are a threat to the environment. Don't let them fly through the air. If you are afraid of this happening, do not use them outside.
- Latex balloons (especially when used outdoors) burst easily.
