You may believe that only professional pastry chefs are able to make edible decorations in the shape of tricks, but it's actually pretty simple! You just need to have some colored sugar paste on hand and some real cosmetics to use as a reference model. Learn how to make these beautiful cupcake decorations and make some jaw-dropping themed desserts!
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Color the Sugar Paste
Step 1. Purchase or prepare the sugar paste
It is a very dense dough, similar to plasticine, based on sugar that is often used to decorate cakes. You can dye it and color it as you like, so it is perfect for creating edible decorations in the shape of cosmetics.
- You can find it in supermarkets in the section dedicated to sweets or in pastry supply stores.
- You need a stick of sugar paste or the recipe to make it.
Step 2. Decide on the colors you need
You can buy pre-colored sugar paste or dye the white one to get almost any shade, but remember that you need some time to organize the necessary shades. For example, if you want to make a lipstick-shaped decoration, you must have red or pink paste; if you want to create an eyeshadow kit, you must have green, purple or blue paste available.
- Write down which tricks you want to style and what colors are needed to make them.
- Since most cosmetics are offered in black plastic packaging, it is essential to have sugar paste of this color.
- To dye it, you need to get food coloring. Buy all the shades you need for cupcake decoration at the grocery store or grocery store.
Step 3. Add the dyes to the sugar paste using a toothpick
When you're ready, put on a pair of food grade gloves and break the block before adding the color with the stick; dip a clean toothpick in the dye and then insert it into the paste.
- Remember to throw away any toothpicks that have come into contact with the sugar paste and don't dip them in the color again.
- It is practically impossible to get a black sugar paste, so you need to buy ready-made one at the grocery store. It is difficult to get the other intense colors as well, such as red; again, you should buy ready-made loaves.
Step 4. Distribute the dye by working the paste
Once the color has been added, start kneading the dough with your hands protected by plastic gloves, trying to distribute the dye evenly.
- If the result is not as intense as you wanted, take a new toothpick and add more product before kneading again.
- If the sugar paste has reached a too dark color, add some of the white one to lighten it.
Method 2 of 5: Create a Lipstick
Step 1. Shape the dough into a small cylinder
Take a black or white piece and roll it up to the desired shape. The cylinder should be smaller than a real lipstick tube and about half as long.
- You can use a real lipstick as a reference to get an idea of the size.
- After making the cylinder, cut off the top and bottom to create flat ends.
Step 2. Cover the base
Roll out a piece of white or black paste and cut out a rectangle to apply it to the base of the cylinder; if there is an excess part, cut it off.
The rectangular piece should completely cover the bottom half of the "lipstick"
Step 3. Create the actual lipstick
Choose a piece of colored sugar paste, such as red or pink, and work it into a sausage shape as big as the first cylinder you created.
- Trim the base to make it flat and easy to attach to the other item.
- Sever the other end with a slanted cut; real lipsticks have a diagonal tip, so you have to reproduce this feature on your dessert too.
Step 4. Attach the lipstick to the tube
After completing the colored part, drop a drop or two of water on its base and gently press it on the inner cylinder of the tube. Place everything on a sturdy surface and wait for it to dry.
Method 3 of 5: Create an Eye Pencil
Step 1. Roll a piece of sugar paste into a pencil-sized tube
Choose the color you prefer to make the edible decoration; for example, if you want to recreate a green cosmetic, use sugar paste of this color; if you prefer it to be black, take the black paste.
- Make sure the tube is roughly the same size as a real eye pencil; you can use real one for reference.
- Trim the ends of the cylinder to flatten them.
Step 2. Model a beige cone for the wooden part of the pencil tip
Make sure it has the same diameter as the cylinder you just made; then cut the tip and the base, so that they have flat surfaces.
Secure the cone to the cylinder using a drop of water
Step 3. Make a small colored cone for the tip of the pencil
Take a piece of sugar paste of the same color as the cylinder and shape it to create the lead, making sure it is even and well pointed.
Join the tip at the end of the beige cone with a drop of water and set the pencil aside to dry
Method 4 of 5: Create a Bottle of Nail Polish
Step 1. Shape a small piece of dough into a ball
Choose the color you prefer to make the nail polish bottle. For example, if you want to make pink nail polish, take a ball of pink sugar paste; if you opt for yellow instead, take the pasta accordingly.
Use a real nail polish bottle as a reference, to get an idea of the size to be respected
Step 2. Make a black sugar paste cone
After creating the bottle, you need to model the cap which is usually black.
- Make sure the base of the cone fits the size of the ball.
- Compare the size of the cone with a real bottle of nail polish.
Step 3. Cut the base and make it adhere to the sphere
After modeling the cone, you need to flatten the wider end to better define its edges; Then add it to the part of the bottle, using a drop or two of water.
Set the sugar paste glaze aside to dry
Step 4. Polish the outside surface
If you want the bottle to really look like a glossy nail polish, you can apply a thin layer of edible grease with a brush; that way, it should sparkle when hit by the light.
Method 5 of 5: Making Eyeshadow
Step 1. Cut out rectangles and circles to create the foundation for the cosmetic bag
To model eye shadows, you have to flatten and cut out some black paste to obtain rectangles and / or discs; make a small sheet of sugar paste about 5mm thick.
- If you want to make a cosmetic bag with round eyeshadows, use circular pastry rings to get the perfect discs.
- If you prefer rectangular eyeshadows, cut out a couple of pieces with this shape.
- Use a real cosmetic bag as a reference model for the shapes and sizes you need.
Step 2. Cut out smaller rectangles and discs to make the eyeshadow
After creating the cosmetic bag, you need to think about the cosmetic; shape pieces of colored pasta, so that they have the same shape as the previous ones, but are smaller.
- Each piece should be about 1cm smaller than the black cosmetic bag.
- Next, blend the colored and black parts together using a drop or two of water before setting them aside to dry.
- If you wish, you can shape, notch or stamp the decoration as you like; for example, you can use the side of a ruler to create small notches on the rectangular pieces or use a sugar paste mold and leave a design (such as a heart or a flower) on the eyeshadow.
Step 3. Make the applicator
If you want, you can create the smudge; you just need to cut a rectangular piece of black paste (about 1 x 7 cm) and apply a cone of white paste to the end; flatten the base of the cone to attach it to a short side of the rectangle with some water.
