Step 2. Wash and iron the fabric BEFORE sewing it

This will prevent the blanket from shrinking into a weird, irregular shape when washing.

Step 3. The filling (what will make the duvet warm and fluffy) should be approximately 20 cm narrower and shorter than the fabric that covers it, as you will need to cut the hem for your blanket

Step 4. Place the batting in the center of one of the fabric rectangles

Place the other piece of fabric on top. Line them up and smooth them out. Pin them together about half an inch from the edge of the batting.

Step 5. To make sure you have a straight seam, put masking tape on each side, about 10 cm from the edge of the blanket

Start sewing, keeping the foot of the sewing machine aligned with the side of the paper tape. Make sure you go over the edge of the filling so it doesn't move and pile up inside the duvet.

Advice

  • To keep the filling from shifting, sew a few stitches in the center of the duvet.
  • Instead of inserting additional seams, you could run wool or embroidery thread through the different layers of fabric to hold them together, and then close the thread with a square knot. Do this in several places, and then cut the thread to the desired length.
  • Take your time; don't rush.
  • You can change these instructions slightly to make a hemless blanket. You will only need to use a pad that is the same size as the fabric that covers it. Pin the layers and sew them about half an inch from the edge. Use hem tape or bias tape (which you can find at a haberdashery or accessories department at a fabric store or megastore) in a color that matches the blanket to finish the edges.
