Sew a very small buttonhole, or it will widen too much compared to the button. Refine it and take care of the details so that it is easy to use.

Steps

Knit Buttonholes Step 1
Knit Buttonholes Step 1

Step 1. Measure precisely the point where the buttonhole will be created

It is easier to count seam lines than to use a ruler, and it is also more accurate. Mark the points with a safety pin.

Step 2. Sew up to the point where the buttonhole will be placed

Then thread the first stitch on the left needle, as if you were going to knit. However, you don't have to sew, but simply pass the wool from the needle to the front of the garment, and leave it there.

Step 3. Thread the next stitch, from the left to the right needle, exactly as in the previous stitch, as if you were knitting

Instead, pass the first point over the second, and detach it from the needle. Repeat these steps until you have sewn the necessary stitches to form the buttonhole. You need to make a finished hole in the wool, through which the button will pass.

Step 4. Pass the last stitch from the right needle back to the left

Turn and then bring the wool to the front. On the edge where you started the buttonhole, sew the amount of stitches you have prepared, plus an additional one. The spiral purl stitch is a good choice.

Step 5. Turn and thread the first stitch from the left to the right needle, as if for knitting

Pass the additional stitch onto the next one, then thread it back onto the left needle.

Advice

  • When learning how to make a buttonhole, it is advisable to practice with another set of sewing needles and wool, if you think it will be useful for you to understand the procedure.
  • Do not pull the wool too much, but do not leave it too loose when working around the buttonhole. Keep in mind that a button must pass through, and if the hole is too narrow there will be no space to pass a slightly larger buttonhole.
  • Sew a thin buttonhole, as it is smaller and more beautiful.
