As you sat in the hospital waiting for your child to be born, you thought back to the day your firstborn was born. Now, instead, sit there waiting for your grandson to arrive. Time flies surprisingly, and looking back can make you feel old. But just because you have several decades of experience behind you doesn't mean you have to "feel" old. You too can stay young in spirit and mind.
Steps
Step 1. Look at age in perspective
Don't think of age as anything other than a mere number. There are some things in life that we don't have control over, like our birth. Age is not a detail of circumstance, like the color of your eyes, or the name of your parents, it does not in any way define who you are. There are other things that matter, those we can control, for example how we think and how we act.
Step 2. Live and enjoy each day
Every day there is something positive or to look forward to. Appreciate the sunlight feeding your plants, or the movie you're about to go see. Enjoy a good book, or a meeting with friends at lunchtime. If you feel lonely, go to the library. It's a great place to meet and talk to people with similar interests to yours. Surround yourself with people, even if you will never see each other again. You can do this in the supermarket, in a coffee shop or in a shop.
Step 3. Don't waste your time thinking you're too old to do this or that
As long as you are in good health, you can do almost any activity you find interesting. If you've never used a computer, buy one! Learn to use it. If you find it interesting enough, learn how it works and how to solve problems or how to program it! You will find that you have transported the whole world to your room, and perhaps you will be able to access knowledge that can help you save money and make you feel younger. Simply, learn things you have never studied before, do not fear that they are too "young": nothing is.
Step 4. Take care of your body
Eat healthily and get vitamins. Exercise, at the gym, outdoors, or at home. Dance to a CD: moving your body to the rhythm of music is a great workout. At least once a year do full medical examinations and visit your dentist.
Step 5. The movement aspect is vital
Our body needs to move, to be used every day in its entirety and in all its potential. Tai chi is a valid form of movement that guarantees complete body activity, but it is not suitable for everyone. Explore different disciplines and find out which one you prefer and which one you can perform every day, so that, after practice, you can feel good. Hiking and swimming are also great options.
Step 6. Don't look back
Don't worry about what happened in the past. Live only for today. The thing none of us can alter is the past itself. What has been has been. The future isn't here yet, so all we have is the present. So enjoy today, let go of the past, and make plans for the future.
Step 7. Keep your mind trained
Do crossword puzzles, learn a foreign language, or finally get into that hobby you've always been too busy to do. Train yourself to have an open mind. Become a volunteer editor on websites. By volunteering on the wikiHow site you will meet other contributors and keep your writing skills alive while offering free knowledge to readers. You can share what you know in numerous forums as well.
Step 8. Keep up to date
By keeping up with the news, you will always be able to converse with almost anyone. Learn about political, fashion, and / or IT news. Expand your knowledge of new treatments and medications available so that you can provide advice to your family members who may need it.
Step 9. Find ways to interact
Even with the less close people. The opportunities to talk to new people every day are varied. Start a conversation with those you meet at the grocery store, say hello to people you pass on the street, and ask them how they are doing. You'll be surprised how good a few kind words offered to a stranger can make you feel.
Step 10. Be optimistic
Try to avoid negative thoughts, they will lead you nowhere, except in a state of sadness. For example, trying to figure out why your partner died by leaving you alone will only make you cry. Instead, remember all the wonderful years we spent together, and think of the wonderful children who came into the world because of your love. Go out with a smile on your face, and enjoy the rest of your life as best you can. There may even be a new partner on the horizon. You never know!
Step 11. Do something different every day
Normally, the local newspaper provides a weekly activity schedule. Find one you like and dedicate yourself! Perhaps today you may feel like visiting a museum or attending a flower show.
Step 12. Join a group, club, or volunteer at the library or local senior center
Take dance lessons. You can go to a dance hall, think about how happy you might feel about dancing cha cha cha again, like you did in your youth. Join the bingo night organized by your community. Meet like-minded people, and help those less fortunate than you. Most importantly, have fun while doing it.
Step 13. Follow your dreams
Dedicating yourself to something you've always wanted to do or neglected while still loving it, could even result in a new career. Many great painters did not start until late in life, at sixty, seventy or eighty. Retirement can become a starting capital for an independent business. The arts are a good choice because they are free of any age discrimination, so you can use your retirement income to learn and support yourself.
Advice
- Keep doing those things you used to do, biking, camping, swimming, dancing, or canoeing. You can still do it!
- The difference between a normal old man and a sprightly one is phenomenal. Stay flexible and energetic by walking 20 minutes a day and avoiding the elevator, stairs are a friendly alternative. Take yoga classes too.
- Select an aspect of your character to work on throughout the year, such as becoming a better listener or being less short-tempered. Looking back next year, you will feel truly satisfied and know that you are a different person.
Warnings
- See your dentist at least once a year, or more often if necessary. Gum disease and tooth decay can cause physical illness, so take good care of your teeth, brush them twice a day, and use dental floss and an electric toothbrush. Everything you do to keep yourself healthy adds years of health to your life.
- See your doctor at least once a year. If not, you may regret it. Run preventive exams. You will not be able to access it unless you go to your doctor for a check-up.
