Changing an adult's diaper is actually only difficult when the person is bedridden. However, it is possible to do this by learning the right technique. Remember that you have to change it as soon as it gets dirty.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Remove the Used Diaper
Step 1. Wash your hands
It is important to have clean hands before starting to avoid spreading your germs to the patient. You also need to wear gloves to protect yourself from his body fluids.
Step 2. Prepare all the necessary tools
You need a new nappy of the right size and wet wipes. You also need to find a place to put the dirty diaper at the end, as well as a water repellent cream. The latter serves to protect the patient from residual moisture once the diaper has been changed.
Step 3. Peel off the adhesive tape on the sides
Open the sides of the diaper and gently roll the patient towards you. Fold the opposite side of the diaper, relative to your position, as much as possible under the person, this will make it easier to remove it quickly. Clean the patient's front with a wipe.
Step 4. Roll the person to the opposite side
Gently have the patient now turn to the other side, away from you. The best way to proceed is to help the patient by supporting him by the shoulder and pelvis. Make sure he turns completely until he is on the opposite side, almost prone.
Step 5. Clean it as best you can
Continue washing the patient before removing the diaper, especially if he has defecated. Try to wipe off most of the dirt before completely removing the diaper.
Step 6. Remove the diaper
At this point you can take it out from under the patient and fold it back on itself to hide the excrement. Finally throw it away. You can put it in a plastic bag before throwing it directly in the trash, to reduce the odor.
Step 7. Complete the cleaning
Use a clean washcloth to finish washing the patient. Make sure it's perfectly clean before proceeding. When the wipe remains clean even after rubbing it on the patient's body, then you are certain that you have done a thorough job.
Step 8. Allow the subject to air dry
Once clean, wait a few minutes for it to air dry. You don't have to put the new diaper on when it's still wet.
Part 2 of 2: Put on the New Diaper
Step 1. Place the new diaper under the patient's body
Open it with the plastic side facing the bed. Tuck the edge furthest away from you under the person's hip if possible.
Step 2. Apply a cream or powder
You can now apply baby cream or baby powder. This trick allows the skin to stay dry. Apply a light layer and concentrate mainly on the buttock area.
Step 3. Roll the patient onto his back
Gently pull him towards you, rolling him over the diaper and pull the diaper between his legs.
Step 4. Attach the side tabs, which can be Velcro or adhesive
The diaper should be snug, but not so tight that it becomes uncomfortable to wear. You need to be able to slip at least one finger under the top edge.
Perhaps it is necessary to roll the patient a little towards you to reach the part of the diaper that is under his body
Step 5. Make sure the penis is facing down
It shouldn't be pointing to either side, as it could cause leaks, so make sure it's facing down.
Step 6. Discard the gloves
Remove them so that the inner side is turned outwards and then discard them.
Step 7. Add a disposable waterproof crossbar to the bed
If you want, you can decide to put one under the patient's body. Roll the subject to one side, so that the crossbar slides under his body, then roll him to the other side to accurately position the sheet. This is useful for keeping the bed clean in case of an accident.
Advice
- If you are the nurse who takes care of the person, always wear gloves when changing diapers to avoid coming into contact with his body fluids and dirty diaper residues.
- Make sure the patient's genital area is perfectly dry before putting on a new diaper.
- Disposable adult diapers (especially those similar to baby diapers) are available in different sizes. Check the packaging to find the most suitable size for the person who has to wear them. If you do not find any size suitable for the patient (for example even the large / extra large that is sold is too small) you can search the internet for disposable diapers suitable for obese people.
