How to Catch the Legendary Dogs in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

The Legendary Dogs, in some cases called the Legendary Beasts or the Legendary Cats, are unique and powerful Pokemon that only appear in the final stages of the game. If you're playing FireRed or LeafGreen, you won't have completed your adventure if you don't find the Legendary Dogs, but it's not as easy as it sounds. Dogs are not only difficult to catch, but they move randomly instead of staying in one place. That said, with a few simple tricks you will be able to find out their location in no time.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Freeing the Dogs in the World

Step 1. Your specific legendary dog will only appear when you have met certain conditions

In order not to run the risk of having you meet the dogs when you are still too weak to face them, these Pokemon will not enter the game until you have reached the final stages. You will only be able to catch one dog, based on the starting Pokemon you have chosen:

• With Squirtle you can catch the lightning dog Raikou.
• With Bulbasaur you can catch the fire dog Entei.
• With Charmander you can catch the Suicune water dog.

Step 2. Defeat the Elite Four

You will have to beat the final bosses of the game, the Elite Four, to reveal the Legendary Dogs. You will be able to face the Elite Four only after you have collected all the medals of the gyms.

• You'll need a lot of level 50 Pokemon to beat the Elite Four, and they'll be strong enough to catch dogs too.

• The Elite Four have a huge variety of Pokemon and each of the 4 trainers have a specialty that you need to counter:

  • Lorelei uses Ice-type Pokemon. Counter them with Electric Pokemon.
  • Bruno uses Fighting and Rock-type Pokemon. Counter them with a Flying Pokemon.
  • Agatha uses Poison-type Pokemon. Counter them with a Psychic Pokemon.
  • Lance uses Dragon-type Pokemon. Counter them with Electric and Ice Pokemon.

  

  Step 3. Acquire the national Pokedex by catching 60 types of Pokemon

  After you catch or train 60 unique Pokemon, Professor Oak will give you the National Pokedex. Once you have it and defeat the Elite Four, you can find the dogs.

  You will need to return to Professor Oak's house at the beginning of the game to get the national Pokedex

  

  Step 4. Consider that the dogs are moving randomly

  Unlike Legendary Pokemon, dogs do not appear in a fixed position and wait for you to go and challenge them. Whenever you enter a building, start a fight or change areas, the position of the dogs on the map will change, making them very difficult to find. However, there are some tricks to reveal them.

  Part 2 of 3: Finding the Legendary Dogs

  

  Step 1. Try walking in tall grass in Kanto

  You can find dogs by walking in tall grass, like all other Pokemon. Find a path with lots of grass patches and weak Pokemon, such as Pewter City, Route 2, or Route 7, and walk randomly through the small bushes.

  You can also use the bicycle to move faster

  

  Step 2. Purchase 10-20 Repellents Max

  Repellents prevent weak Pokemon from attacking you, but Legendary Pokemon will ignore it. This means that dogs will be the only Pokemon you can encounter.

  Max Repellents work for about 250 steps, then you'll need to use another one

  

  Step 3. Choose a Pokemon of level 49 or lower as a starter

  Go to "Squad" and put one Pokemon lower than level 50 as the first Pokemon. All dogs are level 50, and Max Repellents scare all Pokemon of lower level than your starter.

  The best choice is to put a level 49 Pokemon first. This way you will only find Pokemon of level 50 and above, ie only dogs

  

  Step 4. Walk in the grass for 10-20 seconds to look for the dogs

  Remember, dogs move randomly every time you change areas. You can walk in the same patch of grass for hours, but if you never change areas, the dog will stay where it is.

  

  Step 5. Enter a building or a new area if you can't find the dog

  The easiest place to do this is the house on Route 2 above Viridian City. Walk in the grass for 10-20 seconds, then enter the house and exit immediately after. The dog will have to change position, and if you are lucky, he will move to the grass just outside the house.

  

  Step 6. Repeat this process:

  apply repellent, check the grass and reset the position until you find the dog. Keep checking the grass with the Max Repellent until the dog appears. It may take some time, as the dog's position is chosen randomly. Remember, however, that the dog can move anywhere. You will have to be patient to get your chance.

  

  Step 7. Use the Pokedex to find the dogs again if you missed the chance

  When you see a Legendary dog for the first time, the Pokedex will automatically update its location. It will be much easier to find it if you fail to catch it the first time. Open the Pokedex, scroll to the dog's entry, and check the "Area" section to find it.

  • If you accidentally kill the dog, it won't reappear in the future.
  • Remember, however, that as soon as you try to reach the dog position it will move. Check the Pokedex every time you enter a new area, to see if it is in the same area as you.

  Part 3 of 3: Catching the Dogs

  

  Step 1. Be aware that Legendary Dogs are among the most difficult Pokemon to catch

  Even if they are powerful, it will not be difficult to defeat them with a team of 6 Pokemon. The dogs, however, resist capture and will try to escape as soon as you meet them. This makes them very difficult to catch.

  Any damage you inflict on the dog is permanent. If you meet him once and bring him to half health before he manages to escape, when you meet him again he will still have half health

  

  Step 2. Make sure you attack first using a fast speed Pokemon

  If you don't attack first, the dog will almost always run away before you can act. To avoid this possibility, make sure the Pokemon you leave has sufficient speed. You can give the Pokemon the "Swift Claw" to make sure it attacks first. To act first, your Pokemon's speed will need to be higher than the dog's:

  • Suicune has 85 of speed.
  • Entei has 100 of speed.
  • Raikou has 115 of speed.

  

  Step 3. Use bindings that prevent the dog from escaping

  Some Pokemon, such as Wobbuffet, have the Shadowwalk ability, which prevents Pokemon from escaping. Other Pokemon can use abilities like Bad Look, Block, and Trappoarena, which prevent the dog from running away if the Pokemon that used them remains in battle.

  Attacks like Wrap and Fire Spin deal damage over multiple turns and prevent Pokemon from escaping. They will last for 3-5 rounds before needing to be reapplied

  

  Step 4. Put your dog to sleep, freeze or paralyze it for easier capture

  These effects are often difficult to inflict, but if you succeed, you will prevent the dog from escaping and your Poke Balls will have a better chance of catching him. Try moves like:

  • Sleep
  • Spores
  • Paralysis
  • Poison

  

  Step 5. Try to prevent the dog from using Roar

  This annoying attack, which Entei and Raikou have, forces your Pokemon to flee the battle and allows the dog to escape. While there isn't much you can do to avoid it, putting your dog to sleep or paralyzing him will prevent him from using this move.

  The "Taunt" attack negates the effects of Roar, but you will have to use it in the first turn for it to be effective

  

  Step 6. Weaken the dog until it reaches 10% of its life

  If you kill the dog you will miss the chance to catch him. Use quick and effective moves like False Swipe and Night Shadow to reduce his health without causing too much damage.

  Never risk using a very powerful attack - if the dog escapes before you can catch him, when you meet him again he will have the same health. This means you can take the time you need

  

  Step 7. Use as many Ultra Balls as possible to catch the Pokemon

  Whenever an orb fails, catching the Pokemon becomes easier, so don't be discouraged after the first few attempts. You can put your dog to sleep or paralyze to make it easier to catch.

  • You will probably need 50 Ultra Balls or more to catch it. Better to have too many than to finish them before you can catch him.
  • The Timer Balls, which gain power as the fight progresses, reach their maximum strength on turn 25. Use the Ultra Balls to weaken the Pokemon, then use the Timer Balls in subsequent turns to make the most of them.

  

  Step 8. Alternatively, use the Master Ball in the first round

  Using the Master Ball is the easiest way to catch a difficult Pokemon, because it can't fail. Immediately after meeting him, all you have to do is throw the Master Ball on your first turn. It is a 100% safe method of catching these Pokemon.

  However, remember that you only have one Master Ball available in the entire game. That said, meeting the dog is the best opportunity to use it

  Advice

  • Make sure you have all the Ultra balls you can bring or afford.
  • If you chose Squirtle, you will meet Raikou. If you have chosen Charmender, you will meet Suicune, and if you have chosen Bulbasaur, you will meet Entei. Remember this when choosing the team to fight the Legendary Pokemon.
  • Paralysis, Sleep, and Poison make a Pokemon easier to catch.
  • Save the game often, so you can load up if you accidentally kill the dog.

  Warnings

  • Try not to poison or burn the dog or he may die from his injuries.
  • Saving when the Legendary Pokemon is in the same path as you will allow you to load and try again if you were to beat it, but keep in mind that when you reload the Pokemon's location will be changed.
