Mewtwo is considered to be the strongest Pokemon in the game. Because of this, it can also be the most difficult to find and capture. Here are some simple tips on how to catch Mewtwo and take another step on the path of the Pokemon Master!
Steps
Not to be confused with Mew.
Step 1. Beat the Elite Four
You won't be able to get Mewtwo if you haven't beaten the Pokemon League first.
Step 2. Obtain the National Pokedex from Professor Oak
You will need to have caught at least 60 Pokemon to receive it.
Step 3. Repair the Network Machine by finding the Ruby and Sapphire (see below)
If you are playing Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, HeartGold, or SoulSilver, you can head straight to the cave in Celestial City
Part 1 of 3: Getting the Ruby
Step 1. Go to Island 1
You will need a Pokemon with Surf to do this. Talk to Celio and he will explain that you need to find an item for his car.
Step 2. Go to the entrance of Monte Brace
In the lower right side of the area, you will see some Team Rocket members. From them you will be able to hear the first password for the Rocket Warehouse. Defeat them and enter the cave.
Step 3. Proceed to the lowest level
You won't have to read any of the braille messages. You must have a Pokemon with Strength to get through the cave.
Step 4. Collect the Ruby and exit
You can use an Escape Rope, use the "Pit" move or exit by retracing your steps.
Part 2 of 3: Getting the Sapphire
Step 1. Go to island 6 and find the Hole, which you can see on the City Map
At the entrance, read the sign in braille. It will read "Cut," so make sure you bring a Pokemon that knows Cut.
If you haven't saved Lorelei from Island 4 yet, a scientist will block your way
Step 2. Inside the cave, read the Braille signs
They will tell you which hole to fall into. If you find two symbols, go up; 5 symbols means right; 4 symbols indicate to move down or to the left. If you're wrong, you'll have to start over.
Step 3. In the lower level, you will find a Sapphire
Don't sing victory too soon, though; first a super nerd will pick it up. He will then give you the second password for the Rocket Warehouse.
Step 4. Go to the Rocket Warehouse, which you will find on Island 5
You will need to defeat all Team Rocket members to get to the boss.
Step 5. In the last room, you will meet the super nerd who stole the Sapphire
Beat him. When you beat him, you will receive the Sapphire.
Step 6. Travel to Island 1
Give the gems to Celio, the man who operates the machine on the island. It will connect the Kanto and Hoenn regions with a signal and clear the way for Mewtwo.
Part 3 of 3: Finding Mewtwo
Step 1. Go to Heavenly City
In the upper left corner of the city, you will see an open cave. Travel north on Route 24 and use a Pokemon that knows Surf to reach the entrance.
Step 2. Inside the cave, you will have to go through the maze until you reach the lowest level
Make sure your Pokemon team is of a high level - you will find many powerful Pokemon in this area (levels 46-70).
Step 3. Eventually, you will see Mewtwo. Save the game before you face him, because this is your only chance to catch him and he is very powerful. Read the Tips section for some capture methods. You should carry at least 50 Ultra Balls with you.
Advice
- Save before the battle and restart the game if you are unsuccessful.
- If you don't want to use your Master Ball, stock up on Ultra Balls (around 70). Timer Balls can also be effective, as their success rate increases as turns go by. You can manage to catch Mewtwo with these orbs, but it is very difficult.
- In FireRed / LeafGreen or newer games, a high-level Pokemon with False Swipe will help you tremendously. False Swipe is a weak normal-type move that cannot drop the enemy's HP to less than 1. Parasect in particular is a very useful Pokemon because in addition to False Swipe it can learn Spore, which has a 100% chance to put your enemy to sleep. In HG / SS, this move is available as a TM in one of the Stores, but on RF / VF you will need to pair a male Scyther or Nincada with a female Paras or Parasect in the Island Board 4.
- Another strategy is to use a Pokemon with the Poison Bomb and Sleep Dust moves. It begins by putting Mewtwo to sleep and then constantly uses Bombaveleno to reduce its HP. Be careful not to accidentally poison him. Then he starts throwing Ultra Ball at Mewtwo. If Mewtwo uses Safe Guard, switch Pokemon until you can fall asleep again.
- Capturing a high-level Ditto in the cave can be useful against Mewtwo, as he is able to copy all his moves.
- Inflict altered states on Mewtwo. Freezing and Sleep are best, but others like Paralysis will be useful to you as well.
- The easiest way to catch Mewtwo is to use the Masterball, which you can get from the president of the Silph Co. in Saffron City. The success rate of the Master Ball is always 100%.
- Try to bring a team of Pokemon above level 65 with you. Mewtwo will be level 70 when you meet him. Use different types of Pokemon against him, but avoid Poison or Fighting ones.
- Take a Tyranitar with you to at least level 56, which will be immune to Mewtwo's Psychic-type moves and will damage it with Sandstorm. Keep throwing Ultra Ball at Mewtwo until it is captured.
Warnings
- Save your game. You can only try to catch Mewtwo once.
- Some Pokemon in the Heavenly Cavern (aka the Unknown Dungeon) won't let you escape, so be careful!
- It is easy to get lost in the Celestial Cavern; consult a map if you need help.
- Max repellents work on cave Pokemon. However, if your active Pokemon is lower level than the wild ones they will not work. For the best results, put your strongest Pokemon first.
