It can be difficult to transition from childhood or adolescence and become an adult capable of juggling life. Everyone has a different view on this, but there are general goals to be achieved in order to become an independent person and make it on one's own merits, without the help of parents or other people.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Having an Adult Lifestyle
Step 1. Complete your course of study
You should at a minimum graduate and then graduate or even get a master's or doctorate to be more likely to land a well-paying and passionate job. Try to figure out what your favorite subjects are - this will probably help you find purpose when you grow up.
Step 2. Look for a job
Do a thorough research through sites and newspaper ads, or establish a relationship with professionals who work in the sector you are interested in, maybe they can offer you professional opportunities that allow you to start earning income. Once you have found a job, be on time every day, work consistently and always look for learning opportunities: this will show that you are a responsible and good employee.
- When applying for a job, send well-written cover letters and resumes demonstrating your education and experience.
- When interviewing, don't forget to ask questions. Before you go, do a research on the company.
Step 3. Become financially independent
Look for a job that allows you to earn a regular salary that is high enough to cover all expenses. Don't rely on your parents or other people to pay bills or other costs.
Step 4. Take out health, vehicle and / or home insurance (whether you are renting or owning it)
When you become an adult, do some research on choosing an insurance company and start paying the premium. If you have or intend to buy a car, house or apartment, you will need insurance to protect these assets.
Step 5. Look for an apartment or house all to yourself, whether it's for rent or for sale
Search online, check out newspaper ads, or contact a real estate agency. You should find a property at a reasonable cost, in good condition, in a place that makes you feel safe in every respect. Ideally, pick one that is close to where you work or do other businesses and that you can afford to pay on your own, without roommates.
Step 6. Try to have reliable transportation
Considering the city you live in, buy a vehicle or find out which public transport routes are right for you. You can find a used, and therefore cheaper, car at a dealership that deals with second-hand cars, online or by reading newspaper ads. When it comes to bus, train or metro, get a pass so you can pay less and travel whenever you want.
Step 7. Travel to your country or the rest of the world
Save and plan to visit new places for the purpose of living new experiences, meeting new people and lifestyles.
Step 8. Try to have serious relationships
Commit to cultivating friendly and romantic relationships that you think have good prospects, with people who are mature, responsible, and kind to you. Don't waste your time with jokes or people that surely won't last and exclude all the people who bring out the worst in you.
Step 9. Take responsibility for your actions
Understand that everything you do has consequences. You control the progress of your life by means of the words you say and the actions you do. If you want to get high grades, you have to study. If you have responded badly to a former boss, you won't be able to ask him to write a reference letter to get the job of your dreams. Remember that both good and bad actions (and their consequences) are your choice.
Method 2 of 3: Adopt Responsible Habits
Step 1. Try to always be on time
If you make an appointment, don't stand up and show up on time. This is an indication of responsibility and respect.
Step 2. Spend wisely
Have a weekly budget for coffee, supermarket, etc., then stick to it. Calculate the amount or percentage of your salary that you will put aside in a savings account and that you will not touch. You can also invest in a retirement fund or stock market with the help of a professional or an app.
Step 3. Pay bills, debts and loans regularly
Set up automatic payments, email / text message alerts, or other methods to pay for everything easily or remember to do it on time. If possible, pay for any credit card or loan fees in full to avoid interest and additional fees.
Step 4. Store and organize the things you have in the house in a logical way, so that it becomes much easier to be on time, prepared and responsible
Buy plain plastic storage bins or closet organizers to reduce clutter and find things easier.
Follow these lists to figure out whether to hang or fold your clothes. The following items of clothing should be hung: coats, dresses, elegant trousers and skirts, shirts and blouses. Fold the following items: jeans, t-shirts, underwear, socks and sweaters
Method 3 of 3: Change Your Mental Predisposition
Step 1. Stop having childish behaviors
Find out if you tend to behave in the following ways and commit to change using willpower, mental exercises, or psychotherapy.
- Sulking, moaning or complaining.
- Manipulating others to arouse compassion.
- Constantly asking for help from others.
- Behaving in a disorganized or irresponsible way.
- Postpone your commitments, be inattentive and often late.
- Driving recklessly or behaving without showing any regard for the health and safety of others.
Step 2. Make independent life decisions
Whether it's about study, work, relationships, or goals in general, make a decision because it matters to you and makes you happy, not because your parents, friends, or other people tell you you should.
Step 3. Grow what you like
It may seem obvious to you, but you recognize the things that you are really passionate about and that make you happy, without being ashamed. If you like a band that would be considered gooey or old-fashioned by most people you know, don't make excuses or say you like them in a wry or joking way - just listen to them.
Step 4. Respect authority figures without constantly needing their approval
Don't rebel or challenge people who are older than you or who are in a higher position. Listen respectfully to people who have more authority than you and remember one thing: the fact that you are an adult does not mean that you should not listen to others. On the other hand, don't do something just to get approval from an authority figure at school, at work, or in your social life.
For example, if your boss or teacher tells you you need to turn in a report, listen to it and respond positively by completing it on time. However, don't rush to him every time you finish writing a paragraph to beg for his praise or approval before moving on
Step 5. Ask for constructive criticism
Feel free to listen and ask your teachers, classmates, bosses, co-workers and others around you for their opinions, without getting defensive.
To get started, listen carefully to everything they have to say about you or your performance, then decide which ideas you agree or disagree with and determine which opinions you might find useful. Finally, respond by asking mature, honest questions, explaining your concerns, and giving thanks
Step 6. Work out goals and cultivate them
Set yourself goals that can be achieved in a short time (like "Find a new friend this week" or "Go somewhere you've never seen before) and in the long term (like" Become a chef in a five-star restaurant "or" Save money to buy a house ") Write down goals to keep them in mind and reward yourself every time you reach one.
Step 7. Don't blame others when you make a mistake:
admit it. If something goes wrong, don't blame other people or situations. Instead, learn to recognize your mistakes without shame and use them to improve.
- When you make a mistake, acknowledge it.
- Do whatever you can to correct it.
- Think about how you can prevent this from happening again.
- Come up with a mantra or phrase to mentally repeat to avoid feeling shame, such as "It's over and it won't happen again."
