This article describes how to prevent an account with limited access to your computer or mobile device from seeing inappropriate content online. To proceed you must have administrator privileges to modify the restrictions of other users.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Windows 10
Step 1. Open the "Start" menu
You can click on the Windows logo found in the lower left corner of the screen or press the ⊞ Win key.
Step 2. Click on ⚙️
This gear icon is near the lower left corner of the "Start" menu.
Step 3. Click Family and other people
The option is located on the left side of the "Settings" page.
Step 4. Choose the "Manage Family Online Settings" link
You can see that option on this page, right under the limited access account name.
Step 5. Click on Web Browsing
The link is located to the right of the name and profile picture of the limited access account.
Step 6. Activate the "Block Inappropriate Sites" button
Look for it under the heading "Web Browsing"; in this way, you prevent the account from accessing adult pages from Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer browsers, as well as from any other connected device (such as the Xbox One).
Method 2 of 5: Windows 7
Step 1. Open the "Start" menu
You can click on the Windows logo found in the lower left corner of the screen or press the ⊞ Win key.
Step 2. Type windows live family safety in the menu bar
As you type, suggestions appear in the window above the search bar.
Step 3. Click on the Windows Live Family Safety icon which is made up of the silhouettes of a group of people
This opens the relevant program.
If you've never downloaded Windows Live Family Safety, you must do so before continuing
Step 4. Enter your email address and password to sign into your Microsoft account
These are the credentials you use to link your computer's operating system to your Windows Live account.
Step 5. Click Login
You can see this button under the password field.
Step 6. Check the box to the right of an account
You should select the profile of the person you do not want to access adult sites in this way.
Step 7. Click Save
This button is located in the lower right corner of the page and the Windows Live Family Safety program begins monitoring the selected account.
Step 8. Open the link "familysafety.live.com"
You can find it in the central portion of the page; by doing so, open the online settings page of the selected user.
Step 9. Select View Activity Report
The option is present to the right of the user's name.
Step 10. Click Web Filter
It is the first option at the top left of the page.
Step 11. Select the circle that corresponds to "Enable web filter"
In this way you activate the function and at this point three options appear:
- Restricted: block all websites except those dedicated to children;
- Base: block adult sites only;
- Personalized: allows you to choose up to four categories which access is allowed: "Suitable for children", "Online communication", "Adult content" and "Web mail".
Step 12. Select an option
By doing so, you activate the online browsing settings for the selected account.
If you have chosen Personalized, make sure the "Adult content" box is unchecked.
Step 13. Click Save
The button is located at the top of the page and allows you to save and apply the settings you have selected for the user.
Method 3 of 5: Mac
Step 1. Click on the "Apple" menu
This is the apple icon located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 2. Select System Preferences
You can see this option at the top of the drop-down menu.
Step 3. Click Parental Controls
It is a yellow icon that represents an adult and a child.
Step 4. Select the lock icon located at the bottom left
Step 5. Type in the administrator password, which is the same one you use to log on to the computer
Step 6. Select OK
In this way, you activate the parental control application.
Step 7. Select the user's name
You can find it in the left panel of the window; you should click on the name of the person you want to restrict web browsing to.
Step 8. Click on the Web section at the top
Step 9. Check the "Restrict access to adult websites" circle
You can find it at the top of the screen; this option prevents Safari from accessing sites that are clearly intended for adults.
Step 10. Select the lock icon again to save your settings
Method 4 of 5: iPhone
Step 1. Open the "Settings" of the iPhone or iPad
It's the gear icon you find on the "Home" screen.
Step 2. Scroll down the page and tap General
This option shows an image of a gear on the left.
Step 3. Scroll down again and choose Restrictions
If this option has already been activated, you will be asked for an access code.
If you've never turned this feature on, tap Enable restrictions and generate an access code before moving on to the next step.
Step 4. Enter the code
It may be different from the pin you use to unlock the device.
Step 5. Scroll down the screen and select Websites
This option is located in the "Allowed Websites" option group, just below that of several page sliders.
Step 6. Tap Restrict Adult Content
It should be at the top of the screen and when you select it, a blue check mark appears to its right.
Step 7. Select the "Back" button which is located in the upper left corner of the screen
This step allows you to save the settings and prevents the mobile phone owner from viewing adult sites from the Safari browser.
Consider moving the switch to the left Install applications, to prevent the user from downloading other browsers and thus bypass the restrictions.
Method 5 of 5: Android
Step 1. Open the Play Store
This is the white icon with a multicolored triangle.
Step 2. Tap the ☰ button
You can see it in the upper left corner.
Step 3. Choose Settings which is the option near the bottom of the pop-up menu
Step 4. Select Parental Control
The item is located at the top of the "Settings" page.
Step 5. Slide the Parental Controls switch to the right to activate the feature
This will turn green to confirm that you have enabled restrictions on the Google Play Store.
Step 6. Enter a four-digit PIN code and tap OK
By doing so, you have created a code to access the settings, so that no one else can change them without your supervision.
Step 7. Tap the "parental control" option
Inside there are five categories:
- Apps and games;
- Movie;
- TV;
- Magazines;
- Music.
Step 8. Select one of the levels below 18A by sliding the slider
This is a vertical key that slides from the option PEGI 3 (the most restrictive) a Allow all, including unclassified. You can select the setting PEGI 3, PEGI 7 or PEGI 12.
Step 9. Tap Save
This saves the selected settings.
Step 10. Select the "Back" arrow located in the upper left corner of the screen
Step 11. Repeat the process for each content category
In doing so, you prevent the device user from downloading inappropriate content.
Step 12. Open Google Chrome
You can recognize it by the red, yellow, green and blue circular icon.
Step 13. Select ⋮
You can see this icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 14. Choose Settings
The option is located towards the bottom of the menu.
Step 15. Tap Privacy which is just below the "Advanced" section
Step 16. Select Safe Browsing
This way, you use Google Chrome safely, which means that your device can no longer access adult sites or other "dangerous" pages.
Advice
- You can also download an application that blocks access to adult sites from Android devices.
- You can search for programs that block this content in the Chrome and Firefox stores. These are specific filters for the browser you are using; the "Adult Blocker" program is perfect for both.
