One of the most important things you can do to keep fish healthy is to change the water in the aquarium regularly. This is an easy job, but you need to follow a few simple rules.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Check the water to decide if it needs to be changed
Step 1. See if the water is cloudy
Step 2. Use a water test kit to see if the pH level is correct
If not, it needs to be changed.
Method 2 of 3: Remove Part of the Water from the Aquarium
There is no need to change all the water.
Step 1. Use an algae scraper to remove algae from the sides of the aquarium before changing the water
Step 2. If the filter is dirty, clean one part of the components at a time
If you clean everything at once, you lose some of the healthy bacteria.
Step 3. Siphon out between 10 and 25% of the water
Use the siphon around the gravel to remove waste and other substances.
Method 3 of 3: Put in Clean Water
Step 1. Fill a bucket with tap water at the same temperature as it is in the aquarium
Use a bucket only for the aquarium, so you don't have any other chemicals and contaminants in the water.
Step 2. Check the pH balance of the water
If you use tap water directly, you will need to put some neutralizer in it and leave it on for a minute. Check the water again before putting it in the aquarium.
Step 3. Use the siphon to put the water in the aquarium
This is better than pouring it, because it doesn't upset the fish or the decorations.
Step 4. Check the water again after an hour to make sure it has the right chemical balance
Step 5. Finished
Step 6. Finished
Advice
- Do not clean the decorations in the aquarium as this removes the beneficial bacteria that are growing on them.
- Leave the fish in the tank while you clean it. He would be more stressed out of his environment.
- If you need to change more than 25% of the water, wait 3 or 4 days and change more.
