Wrinkles form on a dress when it is not worn for a long time or when it is not stored properly. Leather garments should not be treated like those made of cotton or other common materials, but with delicacy, as they are easily damaged.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: with Steam
Step 1. Put the vest on a hanger
Check that this is sturdy and that it can hold its weight. Leaving the garment on a poor quality hanger for a long time promotes creasing. Place the garment on a sturdy support for steam treatment.
When you need to store it, use a hanger with wide arms that follow the line of the shoulders correctly, so that the jacket does not deform
Step 2. Open the shower faucet
Wait for the water to get quite hot; you can also take the opportunity to wash yourself and thus avoid wasting it while subjecting the leather to the treatment. The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes.
Step 3. Hang it in the bathroom and take a shower
Find a spot in the room where you can hang the hanger without the jacket getting wet and take a very hot shower. Take your time to allow the vapor to accumulate in the environment.
- This is an economical solution for steaming leather without having to take the garment to a dry cleaner.
- A safe place to hang it is the inside of the bathroom door, which typically has hooks for clothes and a towel; if there is no support on yours, you can always attach the coat hanger to the edge of the sink.
- Find an area where the vest does not get wet.
Step 4. Put it on
After steaming it for about 15 minutes, you should wear it. Get dressed and consider keeping it for the rest of the day; in this way, the material adapts to the body and avoids the formation of further wrinkles.
Method 2 of 3: with the Iron
Step 1. Prepare the iron
You can use this method as long as you set the appliance to the minimum temperature; if this is not possible, you have to opt for another solution.
Consider buying an iron with a wide range of temperature settings that allows you to treat and care for many items of clothing at home
Step 2. Prepare the vest
Lay it down on the ironing board, spreading it out one section at a time to get rid of wrinkles. Alternatively, you can use any hard surface; since you are using the iron at its lowest temperature, there is less chance of damaging the floor or table.
Lay a thin cotton sheet over the jacket to further protect it from possible overheating
Step 3. Iron the garment
Do not wet it like you would other materials, but iron a small surface at a time. Move the cotton barrier as you go from section to section to avoid overheating the leather; put the iron down for only a short time at a time with quick movements. This detail allows not to damage the material with heat.
- The procedure takes a long time to complete correctly; be patient and resist the temptation to set the iron to a higher temperature in order to speed up the work.
- If you are concerned about ruining the garment, test it on a hidden corner before ironing it all out.
Method 3 of 3: Flatten the Vest
Step 1. Unfold it
Put it on a hard (non-carpeted) table or floor; make sure the surface is flat and sturdy, avoid those covered with tiles or with irregularities. Straighten the jacket's arms and check for creases.
Smooth and iron the wrinkled material with your hands, trying to find the areas that need the most attention
Step 2. Place heavy books on your head
Make sure the surface you cover is smooth and slightly taut to be able to flatten it effectively. Putting heavy objects on the leather is a bit like standing on a bunch of grapes: you crush it.
- A friend's help could be invaluable at this stage; ask him to hold the vest section taut while you put down the weight.
- Old hardcover textbooks are best suited, but you can also use large dictionaries or books that are part of a prominent author's anthology.
Step 3. Wait for the material to flatten out
Leave the vest "under pressure" overnight to get rid of wrinkles. This method takes a long time; if you don't get satisfactory results overnight, wait a little longer.
- Check if the weight of the books has improved the situation; eventually, you can also increase the weight.
- This technique may be more effective when combined with another method.
Step 4. Put on the garment
This way, you allow it to remodel itself around the body. Now that you have crushed it and freed it from all wrinkles, you should keep it on all day; move your arms crossing them in front of your body for at least 30 seconds, swing them back and forth.
