Here's an inexplicable but effective way to keep flies and mosquitoes away from most things. Discovered in Brazil, this method will help you keep your dog's eating area free from insects.
Steps
Step 1. Get a small transparent or zippered sandwich bag
It must be clear and small; grocery bags usually don't work.
Step 2. Fill it about a third or half full with normal tap water
Step 3. Add a few cents to the bag with water
While not essential, it seems that even adding a couple of cents can repel flies.
Step 4. Tie the bag and close it with string
Let a piece of this string dangle.
Step 5. Hang the bag on a rafter or window sill using the leftover piece of string
Place it near the area where the dog eats.
- Make sure there is space around the bag (it shouldn't be too close to a wall).
- It should be suspended higher than any member of the family. This is not only so as not to hit it with the head, but also because the flies will circle around it and, if the bag is up, the flies stay away from people.
Step 6. Move the bag every so often to make it swing
Doing so creates moving light reflections that can annoy flies.
Advice
- An alternative method is to place a bag full of cloves near the area where the dog eats (you shouldn't get to this one though). Flies hate cloves.
- Some bushes and trees attract flies. Search online to find the ones that work best for you.
- Properly placed electrical devices and fans can also get rid of flies.
- The population of Brasilia (capital of Brazil) and all of Brazil rely on this method to keep parasites under control.
