Freshly broken glass is one of the most dangerous things to keep around the house. If you want to smooth the edges of a bottle or other broken piece of glass, you will need a tool or substance to make the surface smooth and dull.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use an Abrasive Cloth
Step 1. Purchase a series of abrasive cloths of different grit from the hardware store, with which you will begin to smooth the edges of the glass
These are easier to use than sandpaper, because they fold easily around the edges.
If you can't find the abrasive cloths, use a hand sander that is larger than the object to be sanded
Step 2. Wrap the hand sander with the coarse sandpaper
Wear gloves to minimize contact with the glass.
Step 3. Hold the piece of glass in your non-dominant hand
Hold it firmly.
Step 4. Wipe the cloth around the sharp edges
Work every 2 cm for about 20 seconds and then continue around the edge of the glass.
Step 5. Repeat with a medium grain
Finally, go over with a fine grain.
Method 2 of 3: Sand with the Drill
Step 1. Purchase a sanding pad for your drill
Choose a medium-grained paper. Use a pad that's large enough to smooth the edge in no time.
Step 2. Hold the glass object steady with one hand
You can also try to tighten it in a clamp, but it would risk breaking. Use this method only if you can hold the glass securely in your hand and without it coming into contact with the sander.
Be very careful when using power tools. Wear gloves, goggles, and a face mask
Step 3. Turn on the drill and start working the edge of the glass
Step 4. Work towards the center and then outside the edges to round them
Slowly rotate the drill until you have completed all the outer edge.
Step 5. Go over with fine sandpaper to make the surface completely smooth
Method 3 of 3: Sand with Silicon Carbide
Step 1. Purchase a pack of silicon carbide powder
Also order sheets of silicon carbide sandpaper for the outer edges. If you have a lot of glass bottles to sand, this will likely be the fastest method.
With this substance the edges are evened out and the glass is less likely to crack
Step 2. Get a flat piece of glass, such as a window, mirror, or picture, and place it on a work surface, on top of a piece of food paper or a sheet of newspaper
Step 3. Pour the silicon carbide onto the glass
Spray it lightly with water until the powder is wet.
Step 4. Place the broken part of the bottle on the piece of glass and start scrubbing with one hand
Step 5. Start by making a circle around the glass with the bottle and then continue working forming a small eight
Don't get out of the piece of glass. Press lightly as you move the bottle.
Step 6. After working the bottle for about a minute, lift it and check the edges
If the surface is no longer shiny and is smooth to the touch, the job is done.
Step 7. Use silicon carbide sandpaper around the corners of the inner and outer edges to round them and make them smooth
Also sand any other non-smooth spots you notice.
Step 8. Wipe with a wet cloth along the edges of the bottle or the smooth piece of glass
Wash the glass in the dishwasher.
