Chestnuts are winter delicacies and when they are on offer it is difficult to resist the temptation to buy too many at once. These are delicate fruits that need special care to ensure that they do not mold or dry out; however, there are some simple storage techniques to avoid wasting them.
Steps
Step 1. Store the freshly picked or bought chestnuts and still peel them at room temperature for a week at most
Store them in a dry and well-ventilated place.
Step 2. Put them in the refrigerator without peeling them
To keep them at their best for a little longer, transfer them to a plastic bag and drill holes in the container to ensure airflow; this way, the dried fruits should last up to two to three weeks in the vegetable drawer.
Step 3. Remember that once peeled and roasted, chestnuts don't last more than a few days in the refrigerator
If you have cooked ones, wrap them in aluminum foil or another film suitable for use in the freezer and freeze them; in this way, you can enjoy them even several months away.
Advice
- Always put a date label on the packaging of the food you freeze.
- Make sure the chestnuts are clean, dry and kept cool so they last longer.
