This article shows you how to find out how much RAM (Random Access Memory) is installed on a computer or iOS device. RAM is the hardware component of an electronic device responsible for the proper execution of all programs, including the operating system itself.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Windows
Step 1. Access the "Start" menu by clicking the icon
It features the Windows logo and is located in the lower left corner of the desktop.
Step 2. Launch the Settings app by clicking the icon
It features a gear and is located at the bottom left of the menu Start. The "Settings" screen will be displayed.
Step 3. Select the System icon
It features a small stylized laptop and is located in the upper left of the "Settings" window.
Step 4. Go to the About tab
It is the last tab of the "System" window and is located in the lower left corner of the latter. A list of computer information will be displayed.
Step 5. Examine the "Installed RAM" entry
It is listed within the "Device Specifications" section located in the center of the page. The number visible to the right of the indicated item corresponds to the amount of RAM installed in the computer.
Step 6. Check your computer's RAM usage
If you need to know how much RAM memory is currently used by the operating system and by all the programs running on the computer, you will need to refer to the Windows "Task Manager" tool (in older versions of the Microsoft operating system this program is called " Task Manager ").
The "Task Manager" application can monitor all system resources (including RAM memory) and indicate how much RAM a program needs to run properly
Method 2 of 3: Mac
Step 1. Enter the "Apple" menu by clicking the icon
It features the Apple logo and is located in the upper left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 2. Choose the About This Mac option
It is one of the items in the drop-down menu that appeared. The "About This Mac" dialog box will appear.
Step 3. Go to the Overview tab
It is located in the upper left of the "About This Mac" window.
Normally the card Overview is the one that appears by default when you open the "About This Mac" window.
Step 4. Look at the "Memory" entry
The number on the right of the word "Memory" indicates the amount of RAM currently installed on the Mac. It also indicates the type of memory and the frequency of operation.
Step 5. Check your computer's RAM usage
If you need to know how much RAM memory is currently used by the operating system and all the programs running on your computer, you will need to refer to the Mac's "Activity Monitor" tool.
The "Activity Monitor" application can monitor all system resources (including RAM memory) and indicate how much RAM a program needs to run properly
Method 3 of 3: iPad
Step 1. Access the iPad App Store by tapping the icon
It features a white "A" on a blue background.
In order to use the application mentioned in this method, you must have an iPad with iOS 7 or later
Step 2. Search for the "Smart Memory Lite" application
Tap the search bar in the upper right corner of the screen, then type in the keywords smart memory lite and tap the blue button Search for located in the lower right corner of the keyboard.
If the indicated search bar is not visible, make sure you are inside the correct tab by tapping the button In the foreground located in the lower left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Locate the "Smart Memory Lite" application
It should be listed in the top positions of the search results list that appears.
Step 4. Press the Get button
It is located to the right of the "Smart Memory Lite" app icon.
Step 5. When prompted, provide your login credentials via the Touch ID feature
Scan your fingerprint using the Touch ID function to authorize the installation of the application on the iPad.
If you're using an iPad that doesn't use Touch ID, you'll need to press the button Install located at the bottom of the screen and enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
Step 6. Launch the "Smart Memory Lite" app
Push the button You open appeared on the App Store page dedicated to the application at the end of the download. Alternatively, tap the "Smart Memory Lite" app icon in the shape of a microchip.
Step 7. Check the amount of RAM in the iPad
At the bottom right of the device screen there is a circle with a number inside, the latter representing the amount of RAM installed in the iOS device.
Unlike most computers on the market, it is not possible to install additional RAM on an iPad
Step 8. Check your device's RAM usage
The blue, red, green and gray status bar at the bottom of the screen shows the RAM memory usage by the operating system and all running programs and the amount of memory still free.
The total percentage of RAM currently used is shown on the right side of the device screen
Advice
- The "Smart Memory Lite" application is available for both iPad and iPhone.
- The RAM memory of a device (computer, smartphone, console, tablet, etc.) is also referred to with the term "memory" which is not to be confused with the free space on the hard disk or in the internal memory of the device. This latter hardware entity is referred to as "mass storage" or "storage space". In the case of a computer it is simply called a "hard drive".
- You can also check the amount of free space available on any computer's hard drive.
