The lay-up is done by running towards the basket with the basketball and making the basket by pulling it slightly from the right or left. Here's how to lay up while playing.
Steps
Step 1. Choose the side you will shoot from
Step 2. Dribble towards the basket using the hand corresponding to the chosen side
If you are on the right, dribble with your right hand. If you are on the left, dribble with your left hand.
Step 3. When you get to the 3-point line you must have the foot opposite the forward side
Step 4. Catch the ball with the opposite hand the foot that is forward
Step 5. Take two giant steps towards the basket
Step 6. Finish dribbling about 2 meters from the basket and jump using the foot closest to the basket
As you jump make sure the knee of the other leg comes close to your chest.
Step 7. Throw the ball at the top corner of the board with the hand that is furthest from the basket (right hand if coming from the left and vice versa)
Step 8. If done correctly, the ball will hit the backboard and fall into the net
Advice
- If you are confused about which knee to raise or which hand to use to pull, practice raising the knee and hand on the same side at the same time.
- Concentrate on hitting the square on the board.
- Practice lay-ups on a basketball court or park.
- It is easier to do this if you train without the ball first.
- It is easier to lay up slowly if you are not a perfectionist.
- If you are coming from the right aim for the right side of the square on the board and vice versa. This is called the "sweet spot".
Warnings
- Do not overdo it when laying up or the ball could hit the backboard without entering the basket.
- Don't go too far under the basket. It happens if you run too fast, missing the shot.
- If you are too far from the basket, the ball will hit the edge and go out.
