Have you just received a beagle and are unsure how to care for it? Then follow these tips to have a happy and healthy puppy!
Steps
Step 1. Before bringing your puppy home you should make sure you have made it "dog proof"
Pick up trash from the floor, personal items, and food that isn't for dogs or animals, as well as any other items that might stick in his throat and choke him.
Step 2. Once you bring the puppy home, show him the house
In this way he will acclimatize and calm down.
Step 3. Buy everything the puppy needs
Here is a list.
Step 4. Two steel bowls
That way he won't catch them by breaking them. They are better than glass ones because they don't break, don't chip and stay cleaner. One will be for food and the other for water.
Step 5. A bed
Some options are: a house with a pillow, some kind of nest, or a basket with lots of towels. Whichever you choose, make it soft and dry as well as comfortable. Remember to keep a blanket handy if it's cold.
Step 6. Toys
Your puppy will be full of energy so he must have toys. You should have some chewable and other soft toys. Check that they are indestructible or he could suffocate and die. Also remember that you don't have to give it glue as a game.
Step 7. Rewards
Make sure you have multiple types: crunchy and soft. Soft ones are good for teaching, crunchy ones are good for cleaning teeth.
Step 8. Puppy food:
Make sure it's canned and dry. Never give him raw stuff. It may not have all the nutrients your puppy needs. Also, don't make it yourself at home. Homemade food is good for adult dogs.
Step 9. Basic grooming tools
A bristle brush, comb, rubber gloves, nail clippers, dog shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and dog toothbrush and towels.
Step 10. A harness and a tag
Get a harness and nylon tag. Do not use a collar when taking it for a walk. Leave with the collar at six months or later. You could damage his neck. Remember when measuring the harness that the puppy will grow.
Step 11. Leave a radio on when you are not at home
This way you will feel safer.
Step 12. Go home often to check it out
Sometimes they get scared or nervous.
Step 13. Brush it every day
Also clean your eyes and ears.
Step 14. Feed him three times a day
Give him dry food in the morning, half and half in the afternoon and wet in the evening. This way he will get used to everything. Obviously always suitable portions.
Step 15. Walk the puppy for five minutes every day or every couple of days
For too long he will get tired and his joints will hurt. Practice the fetch game.
Step 16. Teach your puppy the basic commands to obey you and where to do the toilet from day one
In this way the coexistence will be more peaceful.
Step 17. Drive your puppy regularly to get used to traveling with you
Otherwise, he may pair the machine only with the vet and start whining, driving you crazy.
Step 18. Get him to socialize by taking him to an obedience class once a week
This way he will learn to deal with other dogs and people.
Step 19. At least every six months, schedule a visit to the vet
Also book vaccinations. Teach your puppy that going to the vet is fun (or at least tolerable) by bringing small rewards with you.
Step 20. Bathe the puppy at least once a week but if you really want him clean, every other day
Step 21. Make sure you teach him to understand where he needs to go (usually a newspaper), to avoid letting him remember you everywhere
Step 22. If you can't take him home right away, visit him as often as you can so that he gets to know you
Step 23. Spend as much time with your puppy as you have
It won't stay small forever.
Advice
- Remember to love and pamper him a lot, pay attention to him and guide him to teach them to behave well.
- Always give him plenty of exercise. Beagles are little bursts of energy!
- Wash the bowls daily with warm water and some dish soap. Or put them in the dishwasher. Washing the bowls prevents disease, bacteria and makes every meal better.
- Clean your puppy's eyes every day to avoid infections and spots (even those with non-white coats can suffer from eye inflammation !!!). Clean your ears twice a week to prevent earwax plugs and bad odors.
Warnings
- Don't start training him late. If you wait too long, training can become a SERIOUS problem. Start first!
- Do not leave anything lying around that the puppy could choke on.
- Do not expose your puppy to other dogs before he is vaccinated.
- These tips are only valid for puppies from eight weeks to growing. You shouldn't get one with less time.
