Steps
Part 1 of 3: Prepare the Hair
Step 1. Look in the mirror
Since you have decided to do the cut at home, take some time to look at your hair and decide how to cut it. If you prefer, take a picture of your face and print it, then draw the scale on the image to have reference points when cutting. Some people prefer a long layering for a more natural effect, while others go for a sharper and sharper layered cut. Take the following factors into consideration:
- The thickness of the hair. The layered cut makes the hair more full-bodied, especially in the shorter sections. If you have voluminous or curly hair, it is probably better to choose a longer scale, without leaving too many centimeters between one level and another. If you have straight hair you can choose a shorter and clearer scaling with which to frame your face.
- The shape of the face. Decide which type of scaling best suits your face. A longer layered cut is best suited to the round or square face, while the sharper layered cut highlights oval and heart-shaped faces.
- The style you prefer. If you want to emulate the style of some celebrity or want to reproduce a trendy cut, find out how to adapt it to your hair. Determine the length of the scaling, where to part and how to style them after the cut.
Step 2. Purchase a good quality pair of scissors
They are the most important tool to get a good result and avoid a mess, otherwise it will seem that your sister has cut your hair while you were sleeping. Get a pair of professional hairdressing scissors, making sure they are sharp. Do not use ordinary dressmaking or kitchen scissors, as the final result would not be satisfactory. You can buy them in perfumery or pharmacy.
Step 3. Prepare the cutting station
You need to work in a well-lit spot, near a sink and mirror. The bathroom is usually the best choice. You must have at hand a towel to rest on your shoulders, clips to hold the strands of hair, scissors, a comb. A second mirror can be useful for checking the back of the hair.
Step 4. Wash your hair
When you're ready, wash your hair and use a wide-toothed comb to untangle the knots. Use a towel to absorb excess water, but leave them damp.
Part 2 of 3: Cutting
Step 1. Divide your hair into sections
Unless you deliberately want to create an asymmetrical cut, you need to create layers of the same length on both sides of the head. In other words, the scaling must have the same length at the temples, ears and so on. To do this, divide your hair into sections according to the scaling you want to achieve.
- Separate the upper section of the hair from the rest of the hair. Divide it into two strands with the comb: one on the right side and another on the left side. This portion of hair will include two sections.
- Divide the upper section into two parts: the first extends from the center of the head to the forehead, the second extends from the center to the nape. Use the barrettes to keep the locks parted.
- Start with the two front sections, the one on the right and the one on the left. They start at the temples and end above the ears. Comb them both and hold them in place with the clothespins.
- Leave the back strands free. You don't have to cut the longest part of your hair, so leave it loose to compare the length of your hairdo.
Step 2. Cut the top front section
Remove the clips, lift your hair at a 90 ° angle to your head and grab the lock between your index and middle fingers. Move it in front of your face while holding it with your fingers. Slide your fingers towards the tips, stopping them at the point where you want to create the shortest level of the scale. Cut the hair sticking out between your fingers.
- The 90 ° angle extends the hair directly from the head, producing an evenly layered haircut.
- Normally the shortest level is cut just below the earlobe, or above the jaw line. Use the photo as a reference point.
- Abundant, leaving the strand longer than you would like it rather than shorter. When hair dries, it tends to shorten a bit. If necessary, it will be possible to cut them a little more later.
Step 3. Cut the right front section
Remove the clip at that point, lift your hair at a 90 ° angle to your head and grab the lock between your index and middle fingers. Move it to the side of your face and slide your fingers towards the tips, stopping them where you want to create the side scale. Cut the hair sticking out of your fingers with scissors.
Cut the section slightly at an angle rather than following a horizontal line, to give the cut a softer look
Step 4. Cut the left front section
Remove the clip at that point, lift your hair at a 90 ° angle to your head and grab the lock between your index and middle fingers. Move it to the side of your face and slide your fingers towards the tips, stopping them at the same height as the right scale. Cut the hair sticking out of your fingers with scissors.
Step 5. Cut the back section
If you prefer, you can also scale the hair in the back. Use another mirror to check the work, raising small strands of hair to be cut with scissors. The back section should be the longest, so avoid cutting too short strands. The back strands should be as long as the front strands, or even longer.
Step 6. Comb your hair and check the length of the scaling
When you're done cutting, check your cut and make sure each strand is the desired length. If you see uneven cuts, shorten your hair slightly to make the layering more regular.
Part 3 of 3: A Shortcut
Step 1. Tie your hair into a high ponytail
You may want to put yourself upside down and comb your hair up. Use a rubber band to make a high ponytail.
- The ponytail needs to be very high, but you don't have to make it exactly top of the head. This way you will get a good scaling.
- Make sure it is not shifted to the side, otherwise you will get an uneven layered cut.
Step 2. Slide the elastic towards the ends
If you want a short cut, stop the elastic several inches from the tips. If you prefer a longer cut, slide the elastic 2-3 cm from the tips.
Alternatively, slide your fingers down and not the elastic. This method can be especially useful for those with longer hair
Step 3. Cut off the tail end
Use the scissors to cut the tail protruding from the elastic.
- If you have thick hair, it will take several scissors to cut them all. Make sure you don't move the elastic to cut them all in the same place.
- Don't cut them at an angle, otherwise the scaling will look jagged. Keep the scissors horizontally and cut the tail straight.
Step 4. Remove the elastic and check the layered cut
You will have obtained a regular and natural scaling. Cut some strands individually to give an original touch to the hairstyle.
Advice
- As some proverbs say, "measure twice and cut once". It's best to cut a little and then adjust the length later with a trim if necessary.
- Wet your hair often when cutting.
