Dyeing the tips of the hair, or doing the shatush, is all the rage these days and it's also super easy to do! By choosing the most suitable product for the look you want to achieve and following some basic rules, you can dye the tips of your hair at home and achieve beautiful results without the need for a hairdresser.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Choosing the Products
Step 1. Choose the color that suits you best
Before proceeding with the dye, take some time to imagine the look you want to achieve. Search online for ideas and read reviews of various hair dye and highlight products. Depending on the solution you choose, the result could be permanent, so it's important to plan your work well in advance!
- You can decide to dye the tips the same color as your eyes, or a color that is particularly suited to your skin tone.
- Alternatively, if there's a color you've always liked but doesn't look particularly good on you, using it to dye the tips can be a great opportunity to take advantage of it without framing your entire face. Just make sure you only use it on the tips.
Step 2. Buy a lightening or sunburn product
If you have dark hair and want to dye the tips a light color, this step is mandatory. You need to lighten your hair first if you want the light color to take root. If your hair is already very light or you don't mind dyeing directly on your natural color, you can skip this step.
The colors change according to the natural color of the hair. For example, if you have light blonde hair and you dye it pastel pink, the result will be pastel pink. If, on the other hand, you have dark hair, the result will be a much less intense and dark color
Step 3. Choose the tint
Online you can find the most extravagant colors, while in perfumery or pharmacy you can buy more "normal" colors. You can also read online reviews to find out what other users think about the product and what it looks like when paired with different shades and different hair types.
- Buy more than you plan to use. Don't risk running out of product and still have half a head to dye!
- Get a pair of gloves too. Hair dye stains your fingers, so it's best to protect them in the process.
Part 2 of 3: Prepare the Hair and Work Area
Step 1. Put on an old shirt
To dye the tips it is best to keep the hair loose, so you can see exactly how the coloring proceeds. This means that the dye will surely drip onto the shirt; so make sure the garment is old and of no value to you. If you have a hairdressing cape, it will work just as well. Wrap an old towel around your neck to avoid getting as dirty as possible.
Step 2. Organize a workspace in the bathroom
It is the ideal place, because there you will find everything you need: a shelf, a mirror and running water. To avoid staining it with dye, it is advisable to cover the shelf with cellophane, especially if the color of the dye is very light.
Step 3. Choose the extent to which you want to dye your hair
You can dye only the tips or even a good part of the lengths. It completely depends on you; just make sure you have enough tint! To facilitate the work, you can tie the strands that you do not intend to touch.
- Comb carefully before starting.
- Do the row as you usually do. The safest method, practically foolproof, is to work on dry and combed hair as you would every day.
Step 4. Lighten the strands on which you intend to apply the dye
If you want the final color to be lighter than your natural one, you need to lighten your hair first. This technique, which removes the natural pigment, results in a more intense and brighter color. Follow the instructions on the packaging of the product you purchased. Apply it only on the strands you intend to dye.

- The dye dries the hair. After lightening them, apply a restructuring conditioner to rehydrate them.
Part 3 of 3: Dye the Tips
Step 1. Mix the dye components according to the instructions on the package
Some dyes, such as those from the Manic Panic brand, can be applied directly, as found in the box. Others, on the other hand, are made up of different products that need to be mixed. If the color you have chosen is particularly bold and you want to make it a little softer, you can always dilute it with conditioner. If you want to get a color that is not on the market, you can create it yourself by mixing two different colors.
Step 2. Apply the dye to your hair
You can spread it on the strands with a brush, or you can "dip" the tips in the color, then distributing it on the hair with your fingers. Put most of the product on the tips, making sure they are completely saturated with it. As you go up, use less and less dye and let it gradually fade into your natural color. Do the same thing on all sides, taking care to dye all the strands up to the same point. The goal is to achieve a uniform color throughout the hair.
Step 3. Blending the dye into the natural color is very important
Apply a generous layer at the tips, where the color should be more intense. When you approach the area where the dye fades into your natural color, use your fingers to distribute it along the hair shaft, but with a light hand, without saturating it. This will help the color gradually lighten and prevent a sharp contrast line from forming between dyed and natural hair.
Step 4. Wrap the dyed locks individually in foil sheets
This will heat the hair and speed up the processing time. It will also keep you from messing around and messing everything up. However, this is an optional step.
Step 5. Let the dye work for as long as indicated on the package
From time to time open a foil paper and check if the color has already reached the desired intensity. With many shades it works like this: the longer you let them act, the more intense the result. Just make sure to strictly follow the instructions attached to the product. Remember, some dyes gradually fade with washes; as a result, if you don't let them work long enough, the color will turn out fainter than expected and will go away faster.
Step 6. Rinse your hair
Once the required shutter speed is over, you can rinse your hair. Use cold water to remove all traces of dye and apply a conditioner to rehydrate the hair and give it shine. Do not use shampoo, as it will disperse some of the dye and lighten it. The less frequently you wash your hair, the longer the color will last!
Step 7. Style as usual
Like shampoo, drying systems that use heat can shorten the life of the dye. As far as possible, avoid using a hair dryer, straightener and curling iron. If you really can't do without it, apply a heat protection spray or serum first. Have fun styling your freshly colored hair, experimenting with new hairstyles to put it more on display.
Advice
- If you use a Manic Panic brand product or another plant-based dye, you can keep it on for as long as you want, without running the risk of damaging your hair. Basically, the longer you leave it on, the brighter the color and the longer it lasts.
- Keep a restructuring conditioner and a shampoo specifically for treated hair at home. If you have lightened your hair first, the chemicals in the lightener will have damaged the ends. Apply a restructuring conditioner regularly to prevent split ends.
- Depending on the porosity of your hair, some dyes and some brands will last longer than others. Don't be discouraged if your chosen color goes away with washes or fades too quickly! Instead, experiment with other colors and brands until you find the product that's right for you.
