You are a teenager, you will surely have many friends with whom to have fun and it will have happened that you have invited someone home for a nice sleepover. But if your bedroom is not adequate, your friends may not appreciate and not accept the invitation! So here's how to make your room a hospitable and fun place.
Steps
Step 1. Choose a theme for your room
A true self-respecting room must be furnished and equipped according to a theme that can tie all its components together. There are so many different possibilities and you will surely find what you like best. Some ideas for any themes are:
- Retro theme
- Plaid / Scottish patterned theme
- Theme based on your favorite color
- Theme based on your favorite band
- Theme based on Paris (or another city)
- Theme based on Japan (or another country)
- Music based theme
- Theme based on your favorite movie (Twilight, etc.)
- Animal based theme
- If you don't like these themes, try making your own. Be creative and choose something you really like! After all, it's about your bedroom; make it the room of your dreams!
Step 2. Paint your room
If you like its current color, leave it as it is. If not, paint it! If the chosen theme is a color, then paint your room that color. If your chosen theme is for example Paris, try painting the Eiffel Tower on one wall (or call a professional). You can also use wallpaper, but be aware that this can be very difficult to remove.
Step 3. Buy a cute bedspread
Try to match it with the theme chosen for your room. If you have opted for a Scottish patterned theme, then buy a bedspread in this same pattern. If the theme is based on Justin Bieber, try purchasing a bedspread with his face printed. You may not be able to find the bedspread you want, but try to be creative. Not everything in your room has to be identical to the rest. Just make sure that the color of the bedspread matches the other colors in your room.
Step 4. Decorative cushions
These are really cool and will make your room more beautiful and comfortable. Place various pillows on the bed to make the atmosphere more welcoming. Buy some that match your room theme or some that are in your favorite colors and shapes! This will add a touch of originality to your bed !!
Step 5. Add chairs, ottomans, sofas or whatever else best matches the context
This way, your friends will be able to sit on these furnishings rather than sit on the floor! Add a cushion or two on the chairs to make them more comfortable!
Step 6. Get some original lighting
Buy a lamp or two so that you have a little extra light in your room. Buy special lampshades that match the bedroom theme. You can also hang some white fairy lights if you want to add a touch of glamor or hang some lanterns for a modern look.
Step 7. Purchase a soft carpet to place on the floor
Pick one in your favorite colors. You can also buy a couple of different colored rugs and place them in different places in the room!
Step 8. Buy a desk
As a teenager, you will definitely need a place to do your homework, so get yourself a desk. Even a desk can actually be a decoration in itself! Try framing photos of yourself and your friends / family / boyfriend etc. and put them on the desk. Buy a jewelry box and place it on your desk. Add some candles too. On your desk you can store souvenirs, trophies, pens… Basically anything you want.
Step 9. Buy a board
This is a great way to personalize your room. Hang it on the wall and create a collage that matches your chosen theme. Add photos, posters, drawings, images, anything you want! The bulletin board is really very useful, as you can add stuff without damaging the wall.
Step 10. Add some music
Do you have an iPod or MP3 player? Turn them on and listen to your favorite songs! You can even use your CD player and display your CD collection!
Step 11. Spice up your room with various furnishings
Scarves and feather boas are ideal for framing a mirror, bulletin board or photo. Beaded curtains can be put on the door and can also act as original curtains for your windows! Be creative, but don't overdo it so as not to overly clutter your bedroom.
Step 12. Add pictures and posters to your room
Another good idea is to hang artwork. If you want something modern and original, opt for pop-art style works. If you want something more elegant and less flashy, opt for a photo of a flower.
Step 13. Go for DIY
Have you seen something you like in a magazine but is it too expensive? Try recreating it yourself. Create picture frames, lampshades, bulletin boards, blankets etc. In this way you will have truly personalized objects and perfectly matched to your room.
Advice
- Keep in mind: this is your room, not your friends' room. Customize it to your liking!
- Hang photos / posters on the walls, but don't overdo it. If the walls are too full, the whole room will seem cluttered!
- Always keep the room clear! Try not to fill it with too much stuff. If you fill it with objects, it will be more difficult to keep it tidy and it will always look untidy. Less is more!
- It is advisable to choose a light color for the walls. Dark colors like black, dark green and dark purple will make the room seem smaller.
- Make sure your parents approve of the changes you intend to make to your room. If they disagree, you risk having to change EVERYTHING all over again!
- Always make sure your room smells clean. Who would ever want to walk into a room that smells like dirty socks or a wet dog?
- Ask one of your parents for permission before doing anything and before you go shopping spree to renew. If you still live under their roof, you need to follow their rules.
- Always keep your room clean otherwise it will look cluttered and nobody likes a messy room.
- Remove all childish items.
Warnings
- Some types of masking tape will ruin the paint on the walls. If you decide to attach posters, purchase special tape or use thumbtacks. However be aware that these leave ugly holes in the walls!
- Be careful with the themes chosen for your room. What if you cover your room with Hannah Montana stuff at seven and then end up hating it at fourteen?
- Make sure your bedroom isn't too bare. If it is, add things like tables, shelves, lamps, and cabinets.
- Try not to limit yourself to just painting the walls in your room. If you paint the walls pink, don't leave the chest of drawers or the brown wardrobe!
