The double French braid gives you the option to give an elegant wave pattern even to short or medium length hair. This hairstyle also works for those with layered hair, because it collects all the strands, even the shortest ones. When doing a double French braid, you have a couple of options on how to finish.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Do the Double French Braid with the ends separated
Step 1. Divide the hair in two from the center of the head
To make a straight parting, you can help yourself with a comb.
Step 2. Secure half of the hair with a clip or a rubber band
Step 3. Separate the half of hair you left free into three strands, very high
- You don't have to take all the hair, just a small section from the top. You will incorporate the rest of the hair by proceeding with the braid.
- Try to make the three strands the same, to make the braid more uniform.
Step 4. Hold the locks so that you have one on the left, one in the center and one on the right
Step 5. Pull the right strand through the center, keeping the middle strand shifted to the side
Step 6. Cross the left strand over the central one, once again by moving the latter
Step 7. Add hair to the right section before crossing it over the middle section
Repeat the procedure also with the left section.
Step 8. Continue braiding until you have added all the hair into the braid
Towards the end, you will only have to braid the locks like in a regular braid.
Step 9. Use a rubber band or any other hair accessory to secure the braid
Step 10. Follow the same steps to make the French braid on the other side of the head as well
Once done, you will have two French braids.
Method 2 of 2: Combining the Double French Braid into a Unique Braid
Step 1. Divide the hair into two parts
Depending on the length, it can be helpful to tie one part while working on the other.
Step 2. Divide the hair of the part you want to start from into three equal strands
Don't part all of your hair though, just a small section at the top of the head. You'll be adding the other hairs as you go along.
Step 3. Find a finger position that ensures a good grip on the strands
Step 4. Bring one of the side strands over the middle one
It doesn't matter if you start from the right or left.
Step 5. Move the middle section so that it becomes a side section
Step 6. Now cross the other side section over the middle section
If you started with the left strand, this will be the right.
Step 7. Add some hair to the side section before going through the center
From now on you will have to do it every time, with both the right and left strands.
Step 8. Continue braiding your hair following the same steps
Step 9. Decide where you want the two braids to come together and make a couple more braids beyond that point
Step 10. Use a hair clip or rubber band to secure the braid
Step 11. Repeat the steps on the other half of the hair
Step 12. Join the two braids
- With the three strands of the second braid in your hand, you have to take the outer strand and combine it with the central one in a single strand. This way you will only have two strands left.
- Remove the elastic from the first braid and take the strands, then join the two outer ones here too.
-
If you have followed the steps, you should be able to join the two inner strands, thus obtaining only three strands.
Step 13. Now weave these three strands normally, passing the outer strands over the middle one until you reach the ends of the hair
Step 14. Tie the end with a rubber band or any other hair accessory
Step 15. Finished
Advice
- Practice making a single French braid, before moving on to the double one.
- Squeeze the strands tightly as you weave, to prevent hair from falling out of the hairstyle.
- Use hairspray to tame any unruly hair.
- If you made the braid yourself, use a hand mirror to check how it turned out.
