A French braid can look complicated and many are even wondering where to start. Making such a hairstyle takes practice but, once you are familiar with the initial procedure, it becomes quite simple. To start a French braid, divide the hair into three parts, which you will need to make the initial braid; continue adding to the main braid the hair that is on the outside for a correct start of the hairstyle.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Parting the Hair
Step 1. Step away from the mirror
Find a place where there are no mirrors to start the hairstyle. While mirrors may seem useful during the process, because they allow you to see what you are doing, they can actually be more confusing, as the reflected images of your hands could deceive you and you would end up picking the wrong strands. It is therefore easier to braid your hair without using your own reflection as a guide.
Step 2. Comb your hair back
To start, gently brush your hair to detangle it and make it soft; then, comb them backwards away from the forehead.
- If you have very long hair, arrange it on one shoulder so that you have it all on one side.
- You can use the clips to hold aside any hair that you don't need to braid.
Step 3. Divide a tuft of hair into three sections
Get a thick tuft of hair, starting from the top of the head; then separate it into three smaller locks, roughly the same size, which you will need to hold in place with both hands.
- The thicker the locks, the bigger the braid will come.
- You will need to hold one strand in the right hand, another in the left and the middle strand with both hands.
Part 2 of 3: Making the First Braid
Step 1. Cross the rightmost section over the middle section
A French braid starts by intertwining the first three sections you separated: take the lock you have in your right hand and cross it over the central one, so that the right lock becomes the new central lock, while the central part will become the new lock. right.
Step 2. Cross the leftmost section over the middle section
Take the lock you have in your left hand and cross it over the middle one.
When weaving the left strand over the middle strand, make sure the latter is the one that was initially the right strand, not the center
Step 3. Pinch the braid tightly to keep it in place
Pull the strands to shape the braid, so as to tighten the knot-like structure you just created. This way the braid will stay in place as you continue to form it.
If you are new to doing this type of hairstyle, the braid may come loose or not perfectly in order. Do not worry! With a little practice you will be able to create tight and precise braids
Step 4. Move the braided hair to your left hand
Use your fingers to keep the hair parted into three different strands and carefully transfer all three strands into your left hand, making sure to keep them parted using your fingers even when holding them with one hand.
Part 3 of 3: Adding More Hair
Step 1. Take a strand from the right side of the head
Use your free hand to grab the non-braided hair near the right ear, as you will need to add more strands to the braid. The new section will need to be the same size as the ones you have in your left hand.
Step 2. Add the new right strand to the current right strand
Use your right hand to incorporate the section of hair you just picked up into your current right section to create a larger, thicker section.
Step 3. Cross the right section over the middle section
Using your right hand, take the new right strand and pass it over the middle one, then pull the braid lightly to tighten it.
Step 4. Move the hair to the right hand
Take all the hair and transfer it to your right hand, using your fingers to keep the sections separated into three distinct strands.
Step 5. Repeat the procedure on the left side
You will need to repeat the same steps for the left side, taking a new strand from this side of the head and incorporating it into the existing left strand. Pass the new left strand thus created over the central one and then move the hair back into the left hand to start over on the right side.
