Butter slime is a slime with a soft and buttery consistency. You can spread it with a butter knife, and if you mix it with some yellow food coloring, it can even look like real butter! Unfortunately, most of the most famous recipes involve the use of a specific type of clay, which is sometimes difficult to find. Thankfully, it's possible to make butter slime without this ingredient using products you probably already have at home.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Making a Plain Butter Slime
Step 1. Mix equal amounts of cornstarch and shampoo
Pour 95 g of cornstarch and 180 ml of shampoo into a bowl, then mix them with a rubber spatula. The mixture will initially be dry and crumbly, but as you blend it a thick paste will begin to form.
- If you can't find cornstarch, look for cornmeal - it's the same thing.
- For best results, use an opaque shampoo rather than a clear one.
Step 2. If desired, add 2 or 3 drops of yellow food coloring
It is not necessary, but it helps to get a better result. Keep stirring the slime until the food coloring is completely incorporated, with no streaks remaining.
If you don't need the slime to look like butter, use another color, such as blue or purple
Step 3. Soften the slime with baby oil
Pour a few drops of baby oil into the slime, then mix it with a rubber spatula. If you use too much oil and the slime starts to get sticky, add some cornstarch and mix it again.
If you can't find baby oil, you might want to try using a hand lotion instead
Step 4. Knead the slime for a few minutes, adding more cornstarch as needed
Lift it out of the bowl with your hands. Roll it out, then compact it once more. Repeat this process for a few minutes until it softens and becomes less sticky. If necessary, add more cornstarch and knead to make it less sticky.
Step 5. When you finish playing with the slime, store it in an airtight container
Keep in mind that it won't last long. Play with it while it's soft. It usually lasts 2 or 3 days. Discard it once it has hardened.
Method 2 of 3: Make Solid Butter Slime
Step 1. Mix equal parts of cornstarch and shampoo
Pour 1 cup (125 g) of cornstarch and 1 cup (250 ml) of shampoo into a bowl. Mix the ingredients with a rubber spatula until you get a homogeneous mixture.
- If you can't find cornstarch, use cornmeal instead - it's the same.
- For best results, use an opaque shampoo rather than a clear one.
- This recipe is similar to the classic one of traditional slime, only the final consistency is more compact.
Step 2. Incorporate 120ml of glue and 1 tablespoon (15ml) of lotion
Empty a 120ml bottle of vinyl glue into a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of hand lotion, then mix the ingredients.
- It is essential to use vinyl glue: avoid transparent glue. Since it does not contain the same ingredients, the slimer will not do well.
- Choose a fragrance-free lotion, otherwise use one that blends well with that of the shampoo.
Step 3. Add 2 or 3 drops of food coloring, then mix once more
Yellow dye is the most used to make butter slime, but you can use any color you want. You can also exclude this step if you prefer a white butter slime.
Avoid using excessive amounts of food coloring, or you will stain your hands when playing with the slime
Step 4. Pour in a little liquid detergent at a time until you get a firm paste
Pour some liquid laundry detergent into the bowl and mix. Keep mixing until the slime begins to thicken and peel off the sides of the bowl. If it doesn't thicken, add a few more drops of detergent and mix again.
- You can also try using liquid laundry starch.
- If you've used too much detergent and the slime is excessively sticky, add some cornstarch and knead.
Step 5. Remove the slime from the bowl and knead it for a few minutes
Lift the dough out of the bowl. Roll it out, then compact it one more time. Repeat this process for a few minutes or until you have a soft, but not sticky, slime.
If the slime is still too sticky, add more cornstarch and knead it again
Step 6. If desired, add glitter to the slime and knead
If you don't need it to look like butter, you can incorporate some glitter. Sprinkle a handful on top of the slime, then knead until smooth.
- Extra-fine glitter for crafting works best, but you can also use the thicker ones.
- If you don't want to use glitter, you could choose metallic confetti in various shapes or plastic rhinestones.
Step 7. Store the slime in an airtight container after using it
Play with it until it's soft and viscous. After 2 or 3 days it will start to dry out and harden. You should throw it away when it begins to take on this consistency.
Method 3 of 3: Make Aqueous Butter Slime
Step 1. Pour some vinyl glue into a bowl
Use the amount you prefer. You can use a whole 120ml bottle or half. Avoid clear glue though.
This recipe produces a buttery but also slightly watery slime
Step 2. Pour some shaving cream into the bowl
The doses of the foam should be double those of the glue. Again, the quantities do not need to be precise. Measure the glue you poured into the bowl by eye, then add twice as much shaving foam as the glue.
- Make sure you use shaving cream instead of gel.
- For best results, use men's foam. Since those for women are often colored, they can alter the color of the slime.
Step 3. Mix the ingredients with a rubber spatula
As you stir, collect the mixture often from the bottom and sides of the bowl to get a smooth blend. If you use women's hair removal foam, make sure the color is uniform, without white streaks.
Step 4. If desired, add 2 or 3 drops of food coloring
The yellow dye creates a slime that is even more like butter, but you can use any color you want, including green and blue. Once the dye is incorporated, mix the slime once more until you get a homogeneous color.
Step 5. Add contact lens solution, then mix again
You will see that this ingredient will make a real difference! Pour about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of contact lens solution into the bowl and mix the ingredients with a rubber spatula. In this way you will mix them and you will form a paste.
For best results, use a contact lens solution containing boric acid, which helps to bind the ingredients better
Step 6. When you finish playing, put the slime in an airtight container
The slime does not last long. After 1 or 2 days it will start to get hard and crumbly. At that point you should throw it away.
Advice
- Remember that colored shampoos and lotions may change the color of the slime.
- Choose a shampoo or lotion that has a scent to your liking.
- Glitter can be added to the liquid mix or mixed with slime.
- The slime is not edible.
- Butter slime makes a great fake butter for plastic toy toast.
