If you are a pipe smoker, you will have found yourself with dry tobacco at one time or another. It can happen that you buy it in a shop where it has not been kept well sealed or where it has been exposed for too long. Some smokers actually like "crunchy" tobacco, but in this tutorial you will find some tips to rehydrate it and get back to creating clouds of smoke.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Rehydrate Tobacco with Heat
Step 1. Use a teapot
Get a model that has a basket on top where tea leaves typically settle. Add boiling water, making sure it does not touch the base of the basket, otherwise you will ruin the tobacco. Put the latter in the basket, cover the teapot and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Check the tobacco to make sure it is moist enough. If not, leave it in the teapot for a while longer
Step 2. Hydrate the tobacco with the steam from the iron
Preheat the appliance to maximum temperature. Place a newspaper on a heat-resistant surface and sprinkle tobacco on it. Use a spray bottle to moisten the tobacco a couple of times with water.
- Hold the iron over the tobacco, holding it a few inches away, and let it steam for 10 seconds.
- Be very careful not to touch the tobacco with the appliance.
Step 3. Heat an airtight jar
Place the tobacco in a clean stainless steel bowl. Moisten it using a spray bottle by steaming it 3-4 times. Next, mix the tobacco with a spoon or spatula, then transfer it to a large airtight jar with a rubber seal and screw cap.
- Heat the jar in the oven at about 100 ° C for 20 minutes or until it gets very hot to the touch. Finally, let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Remove the container from the oven and wait for it to cool overnight in a cool, dry place. Don't open it until the next morning.
- Remember to compact the tobacco well and seal the jar hermetically.
Method 2 of 3: Moisturize Tobacco with Food Products
Step 1. Moisten it with the orange peel
Place the tobacco in a plastic bag or airtight jar. Add a quarter of an orange peel and seal the container. Let it all rest overnight.
The next morning, the peel will have hydrated the tobacco which will be quite moist at this point
Step 2. Use a potato
Put the tobacco in a plastic bag and also add a piece of raw potato. Check the contents every couple of hours, as this method allows for very quick rehydration.
Step 3. Try using bread
Put all the tobacco in an airtight plastic bag. Add a whole sandwich (or half if you don't have much tobacco) and seal the bag. Check the contents every few hours, until the tobacco has reached the right degree of hydration.
If you wait overnight, the tobacco will get very moist
Method 3 of 3: Moisten Tobacco with Wet Products
Step 1. Use a sealable bag
Sprinkle about half of the tobacco evenly on a paper towel. Lightly moisten it with a spray bottle filled with water. Move the mixture with your fingers to crumble it. Repeat this process until the tobacco is slightly wet. Transfer it to a sealable plastic bag in which you had already placed the other half of the tobacco still dry.
- Shake the bag to evenly mix the contents.
- Wait about half an hour to allow the moisture to spread.
Step 2. Cover the tobacco with a cloth
Transfer it to a bowl (better if very large, to ensure a greater contact surface with the air) and cover it with a clean cloth, which is damp but not too wet. The fabric must not touch the tobacco, so you can secure it with an elastic along the edge of the container.
- Check your tobacco every few hours.
- With this method, you will reduce the chances of compromising the integrity of the product.
Step 3. Moisten it with a sponge
Get a new, unused foam sponge, then cut out a corner. Moisten this portion of the sponge with water and then squeeze it so it doesn't drip. Place the piece of damp sponge in an airtight container along with the tobacco to act as a humidifier.
Advice
- If you decide to rehydrate the tobacco overnight, then you should set aside a small amount of dry product to add in case the mixture becomes excessively moist.
- Rehydration is a process that leads to better results when done slowly. Tobacco should not stay wet for long, otherwise it could rot or mold.
