Activity books for kids can teach important lessons to kids while having fun. They can color and do activities when they are at home, on a trip or at school. Method 1 of 2: Design your Activity Book
Step 1. Choose a topic for your activity book
While it may be general, most books have a theme based on holidays, seasons or children's preferences.
Good themes can relate to Christmas or other holidays, summer, family, a farm, flowers, food, adventures, animals, religion, history, sport, forms and cultures
Step 2. Ask your child about his or her preferences, or opt to create the book with them
They might be even more excited about doing the activities if they've got their hands on the construction.
Step 3. Collect fun activities your child loves
The internet is a good source, as there are many sites that provide free, printable activities that can be included in your book. Search for word searches, mazes, connect the dots, crosswords and riddles that are at the child's learning level.
- Search the newspapers for puzzle games or funny cartoons. Kids love comic books and are a good way to encourage them to keep reading.
- Create a "crazy story" for the child. This is a word play template where you write a paragraph or a story. We remove some nouns and verbs that the child has to enter, in order to create his own humorous touch on the story. Create a "crazy story" by removing a word from each sentence. Draw a line under the blank and write whether it is a "noun" or a "verb" so that the child knows what to put in the blank. Story templates of this type can be found online.
Step 4. Write a story to include in your activity book
A good idea is to include your child within the story. Use one of your child's favorite books as a guide and insert them into a similar story.
Step 5. Choose additional educational content for your child
In addition to reading, you can add activities within the book that concern telling the time, simple math, writing, vocabulary and more. Choose activities at your child's level and search for them on the Internet or write them yourself.
Include songs, nursery rhymes and poems to help your child develop interest in music. Choose songs that are based on your chosen theme, such as "Let it Snow" for a winter activity book. You can sing the songs together
Method 2 of 2: Organize your Activity Book
Step 1. Choose the size of your activity book
The simplest option is to use an A4 sheet as you can easily print the material on both sides of the sheet without having to shrink. However, you can also use smaller formats or fold the A4 in half for a simpler composition.
Step 2. Create your activities in a Word Processing program so that you can combine images and text before printing them
You can find pictures of your child's favorite characters or holiday decorations and place them in your document.
Step 3. Create some coloring pages by tracing the outer lines
Print family photos or large images and place them on a blank A4 piece of paper. Trace the outlines of the image using a thick black marker.
Step 4. Create a cover and title page
Be sure to include your child's name, such as "David's Activity Book" on the cover. A title page will need to include the authors if you and your child wrote the story together.
Step 5. Print the front and back pages
You may need to manually turn the pages in the printer to be able to print on both sides. Print in black and white if you are creating a coloring book.
Step 6. Arrange the pages of your book in the correct order
Number the pages on the front and back. Insert blank pages, if you want to have other pages available.
Step 7. Photocopy your book if you are creating it for more than one child
Make sure you choose the photocopy option on both sides.
Step 8. Compose your activity book so the pages fit together
You can use a stapler on the left side or along the center fold. You can also make 3 holes in the fold and insert some yarn through the holes.
- If you don't have the materials to compose the book, or want a more professional book, you can take your book to a print shop. They have print areas where they can compose the book for you.
- If you plan on making a lot of activity pages for your child, you can use a 3-hole punch. Place the activity pages as you make them in a binder. Keep adding new activities, and your book will never end.
Step 9. Provide pencils, colored pencils, or markers along with your new activity book
You can also include stencils if your child likes to play with them.
