The plunger is a tool that is used to unblock traffic jams and obstructions from drain pipes. There are different types of plungers, and there are different techniques to use them without making a mess. Follow these simple steps to learn how to use the plunger in toilets, sinks or bathtubs.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Buy the Suitable Plunger

Step 1. Measure the relief

You will need a plunger that is large enough to cover the drain in the toilet, bathtub, and sink.

  • Measure each relief. Start from the hollow and measure from one side to the other.
  • Write down the measurements so that you can take them with you to the hardware store.
  • Buy a plunger of a size equal to or greater than the largest drain in your home.

Step 2. Purchase a rubber plunger

There are two types of plunger, and you need to figure out which one is right for you before buying it.

  • Purchase a rubber plunger with a flange on the bottom. This narrower part at the end of the plunger allows it to form more vacuum, and therefore to weld better, when you clear a toilet.
  • Purchase a plunger without a flange on the bottom. The normal “cup” plunger works best on sinks and bathtubs. Sometimes the flange does not work well in low exhausts. This model of plunger is the cheapest.

Step 3. Consider buying a spring drill if you often have problems with a clogged toilet

The spring drill is made to break through traffic jams, allowing you to unclog the toilet.

  • The spring drill is covered with a protective sheath that prevents the metal coil from damaging the drain or ceramic toilet.
  • Traditional metal coils scratch and damage porcelain, however it can work for portable toilets and sink jams.

Method 2 of 3: Use the Plunger to Unclog the Toilet

Step 1. Remove excess water from the toilet

The cup must be filled halfway.

  • If the cup is not half full, add some water.

Step 3. Cover the drain completely

  • Now the plunger should be completely underwater.
  • If not, add more water to the cup.

Step 5. Press and pull the plunger for at least 15-20 seconds

Don't pull too hard. The plunger must remain attached to the drain for at least 15 seconds

Step 6. Pull the plunger quickly

If the plunger breaks the traffic jam, part of it could go up into the toilet. The purpose of the plunger is to break the traffic jam and free the clogged areas by sucking

Step 7. Unravel again

Very often it is necessary to unclog 2 or 3 times. Follow the directions below to determine if you need it or not.

  • If the water level drops slowly, add more water and drain again.
  • If the water level drops quickly, try draining to clear the traffic jam.
  • If the water level does not change, you may have to gush another 2 or 3 times. If nothing happens, you can try using a spring drill to break the traffic jam, before unclogging again.

Method 3 of 3: Unclogging a sink or bathtub

Step 1. Close the overflow

Use napkins or something similar to close the holes in the edges of the sink.

  • This hole is made to let the water out when the sink gets too full. However, if it doesn't freeze, you won't be able to create a vacuum, so you won't be able to drain the sink.
  • In some bathtubs it is necessary to remove the metal plate in order to access the overflow.

Step 2. Pour hot water into the tub or sink, if there is not enough to cover the plunger

Make sure you are using the regular cup plunger, not the one with the flange

Step 5. Detach the plunger

Check if the water flows normally.

  • If the water does not run off, you need to add more water and unclog again. Many traffic jams require multiple attempts before clearing.
  • If the water runs off, try running water from the tap to check if the drain works.
  • Increase the flow of water if you notice that the drain is free.

Advice

  • Call a plumber if the drain is clogged with something of value or you can't clear it even with a spring drill and plunger.
  • If you can't create a vacuum when unclogging the sink, use some gelatin on the rubber cup to make it more adherent.
  • You can use a coil made with a wire crutch to unblock the traffic jam in a bathtub. The engorgement could be caused by hair, which is easier to remove before unclogging, rather than letting it flow down the drain.
