Having a beard is pretty cool these days, and for a lot of good reasons! With proper care and a little good taste, it can give a decidedly interesting look to the wearer. That said, a beard can easily get dirty and give the beard a scruffy look. Nobody likes someone who doesn't seem to take care of themselves, so even if you like it unkempt, try to make your beard look the best possible by following these few simple tips.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Beard Growth
Step 1. Follow a healthy diet
Hair grows when enough essential vitamins are taken. You don't have to eat anything in particular, you simply need to have a balanced and healthy diet. Fish is really beneficial for hair growth; if you want to use supplements, you can use biotin (a B vitamin).
Step 2. Determine which style is right for you
Choose a look that is compatible with the growth of your facial hair. Some people's mustache does not join the beard, others' beard grows more on the sides of the face than on the neck. Choose the most suitable beard style based on your growth.
Step 3. Get enough sleep
Scholars have found that lack of sleep can slow beard growth. If you want a nice beard, get enough sleep.
Step 4. Ignore the itch
When the beard grows, it feels quite itchy: the skin on the face has to get used to all that hair, but the situation improves over the course of a few weeks. Don't give up, and don't shave just because your skin is itchy.
Step 5. Don't trim your beard while it is growing
Wait a couple of months (the time it takes for it to take shape) before giving your beard a different look. You must have a beard of at least 3-4 cm before starting to style it.
Part 2 of 3: Beard Trimming and Care
Step 1. Trim the beard to give it the desired length
It is important to shorten it in different cutting directions, to ensure that every single hair is trimmed. Even if you want a long beard, trim it every two to three months to get rid of split ends.
Step 2. Decide whether to completely shave certain areas of the face
Having a dirty and untidy beard is one thing; having it clean and well cared for is another. If you don't pay particular attention to beard care and don't take a firm stance on the look you want to give it, you may appear scruffy, so decide on your style! Shave your face according to the look you want to give your beard (some people prefer not to have neck hair, for example).
To keep it tidy, comb your beard in the direction of hair growth
Step 3. Keep it clean
Washing your beard is essential. Wash your face with soap and water every morning and every evening; there is no need to use an aggressive product, the important thing is that the detergent used removes the excess grease formed on the hair. Dry your face thoroughly and use a clean towel to remove as much water as possible trapped in the hair.
Step 4. Use shampoo and conditioner
The beard, just like the hair, needs to be kept healthy. To wash it, you can use the same shampoo you use for your hair. If you have a particularly short beard, you can simply wash your face with soap and water; if you have a beard of a few centimeters, use shampoo; the conditioner should only be used if the beard is very long.
Part 3 of 3: Beard Health
Step 1. Give yourself some aftershave on freshly shaved areas
Use a product with a pleasant scent, but avoid too strong aromas; try an aftershave scented with cedar, juniper, orange, sandalwood, tobacco and birch. The fewer ingredients the aftershave contains, the better! Stay away from chemical-laden products (if you can't even pronounce the ingredients in an aftershave, avoid the product in question). The important thing is that the aftershave you use is disinfectant, astringent (closes pores) and moisturizing. Outlining the dry beard is rather traumatic for the skin; if you do, use a good aftershave after shaving.
Step 2. Apply a couple of drops of beard oil
To apply the oil, give it to your skin, then rub it on your hair. A good beard oil prevents the hair from becoming sharp needles and makes it grow healthy and strong.
- A good beard oil also prevents the formation of dandruff; for a real man, there is nothing worse than having his chest covered with white "snow" flakes.
- A good beard oil also prevents the formation of grease on the face, as well as on the beard.
Step 3. Use beard and mustache styling wax
Wax should not be used to radically change the appearance of the beard: it is useful for people who have long mustaches and want to keep them in order without having to wear them curled under the lip; in addition, the wax helps to give the right direction to the hair and to keep the longest and most difficult beards in order. Buy beard oil at the drugstore, put some on your finger and run it over the hair to give them the direction you prefer.
Step 4. Follow a certain routine
Using beard oil and wax, giving yourself aftershave and washing your face are all activities you will need to do several times during the week; following a healthy diet will also require some regularity in meals. If you want your beard to grow healthy and keep smelling good, you'll need to get used to doing the activities described in this article on a regular basis.
