Dahlia is a plant that is grown from a tuberous bulb. It is grown by gardeners, professionals and amateurs alike. Dahlia bulbs can be stored during the winter so that they can be transplanted in the spring to produce more flowers. You can follow these steps to store your dahlia bulbs.
Steps
Step 1. Cut the dahlia plant 10cm above the ground before the first frost in your area
You will notice that it is already starting to die from this moment. Be sure not to let the soil freeze, or you will have lost the dahlia bulbs.
Step 2. Remove any stakes or mulch around the dahlia plant
Save the poles for next season.
Step 3. Dig around the dahlia plant about 20cm away from the stem, with a pitchfork or shovel, to loosen the soil
Dig by inserting the garden pitchfork or shovel into the ground and rocking it back and forth. Repeat this process with great care all around the plant.
Step 4. Pull the plant with the dahlia tubers out of the ground
Be very careful not to damage the tubers with the garden fork or shovel
Step 5. Shake the plant to remove as much soil as possible
You can use your hands to remove some of the dirt. Be very careful how you do this, as the dahlia tubers are very tender and could break.
Step 6. Scatter the dahlia tubers in a dry place and let them dry for 2 weeks
Check periodically to make sure the tubers don't dry out. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as they may dry out too much and wither. Do not leave the tubers outdoors, exposed to rain and humidity.
Step 7. Write the name or color of the dahlia plant on each tuber with a permanent marker
You can also write it on the container you use for storage. You will want to know the colors when you plant the bulbs next spring. The indelible writing should hold up all winter.
Step 8. Place the dahlia bulbs in a container with some peat moss
It is best to leave the container open. Peat moss will help keep the tubers dry.
Step 9. Store the tubers with tubers in a cool, dry place
Even better if it is a dark place. A cellar or basement is an appropriate place. The ideal temperature is between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius.
