Do you want to find out about Islam? A public library will not be of much help, since the information it can provide you will likely be scarce and outdated. Whether you are working on a social studies project or want to read up on Islam for personal reasons, here is the best way to approach the subject.
Steps
Step 1. Get an introductory book on Islam
Look for books that offer an overview of the foundations of faith, such as the five pillars, prayers, rituals, etc. Make sure the book is not biased, but, if possible, it was written by a practicing Muslim.
Step 2. Get to know Muslims
Locate a mosque in your area and visit it during prayer times, such as just before sunset or after noon. Wait to see people come out of the mosque and try to strike up a conversation with them.
Step 3. Visit an Islamic center
Call ahead and explain what the purpose is for which you want to inquire about Islam. You will probably be invited to drop by and find them. Before you go, write several key questions on a piece of paper and take a tape recorder or notebook with you to record any information.
Step 4. Read the Quran
If you find something in the Qur'an that you don't understand, don't forget to consult Muslims about it.
Step 5. Read the hadiths (the maxims of Muhammad, may peace be with him)
Al-Bukhari's Sahih and Muslim's Sahih are the most reliable books. Read the books of many famous Muslim theologians and mystics; one of these is Abu Hamid al-Ghazali's Alchemy of Happiness (published in Italian in the volume The Balance of Action), an extremely interesting book on how Muslims should live (with references to the Koran and hadiths).
Step 6. Use an online question and answer service on Islam and ask your questions
Be careful: since you will be talking to an anonymous user, you may not even receive accurate information.
