Starting a graduation speech can be challenging. Here are some useful tips for when you need to write or improvise one.
Steps
Step 1. Start with your favorite quote
It is used to break the ice and gives a first idea of where you want to go. Make it motivational and fun. The source is also explicit.
Step 2. Think about what you liked most about your school
Whether it's a trip, a funny anecdote or a small detail that has stuck with you, be sure to include it in your speech.
Step 3. Think about what you will miss about school
Use those little details (the food in the canteen, the color of the bathrooms…) that make that school unique, and insert them into the discourse.
Step 4. Don't forget a touch of humor
Graduation is a solemn moment, so try to play down the atmosphere a little. No silly jokes, but not too serious either.
Step 5. Use big words
Use words that impress your old teachers, and less used words. Don't make them up though, and don't use words that no one can know.
Step 6. Thank everyone
Talk about who made a difference in your school life. At the end of the speech, thank everyone for being there (teachers, parents, principal, students…).
Step 7. Practice
Work on your declamatory skills in front of your family members, but if you want to surprise them, do it in front of the mirror. Don't repeat it too many times, or you risk getting bored and not expressing any emotion when you read it in public.
