This article explains a few simple steps that will teach you how to write a critique of a book you are reading
Steps
Method 1 of 1: Write Your Personal Critique
Step 1. Read a part of your book
Step 2. Tell yourself what happened in your own words
You can use a conversational tone, as if you were explaining the events to a friend.
Step 3. Reply
What feelings did what happened aroused in you?
Step 4. In the event that this work is a school assignment, pay attention to the criteria that your teacher has indicated to you
Step 5. Start writing
Begin to write down a few lines, based on the second and third passages, in order to prepare a summary of the passage you have read.
Step 6. Points to consider:
- Emotions - Why did this song touch the chords of your soul?
- Characters - Who is involved in the story? Why is he / she involved?
- Language - What did you notice in choosing the vocabulary used? What literary techniques does the author use to give depth to the piece and how does this affect the story, the characters, the scene, etc.?
- What else seems interesting to you? What has left you confused? What didn't you like?
Step 7. In case it was a school assignment, check your work after you are done
Let someone else make corrections for any errors.
Step 8. Repeat the analysis step for the rest of the book
Advice
- Write about the feelings of the characters, don't just limit yourself to the events that happened.
- If you use a computer to write, disconnect the internet to avoid wasting time
- Do not read excessively long passages, expecting to fully understand them, and then analyze them and write the critique. Instead, read a small passage (a short chapter or half of a long chapter), then write.
- Work in a quiet environment, free of any electronic distraction
- Before writing, you can do some exercises, such as free writing, brainstorming, or schematization, in order to focus your thoughts.
- Use post-its and / or highlighters to highlight important passages
