Initially, a typewriter might seem like a confusing and frustrating tool. However, it will be very easy to use once you understand how it works.
Steps
Step 1. Get your typewriter
Step 2. If it's electric, plug it in, making sure the voltage is correct, and turn it on
Step 3. Get two sheets of paper
The first sheet will serve to protect the roller from damage, the second will be the one you write on.
Step 4. Insert the sheets into the back of the typewriter roller
Step 5. With the knob, wind the sheets onto the roller
To wrap the paper in the electric typewriter, you can use the key to wrap.
Step 6. Raise the press frame and lower it when the sheet is beyond the frame
Step 7. Use the paper release lever to set the sheet
Step 8. Use the sliding paper guides, located behind the typewriter, to adjust the margins
On the electric typewriter, however, you can use the keys specifically indicated.
Step 9. Push the manual typewriter carriage back
Step 10. Start writing
Each time you reach the end of the line you will be alerted by the sound of a bell on the manual typewriter, or a beep on the electric typewriter. Push the cart to the right as far as it will go, or on the electric cart, press the button to go to the top.
Step 11. When you have finished the sheet, pull it out using the wrap button or the knob to pull it out completely
Advice
- Use the backspace key to move the cart to a certain character and write on it. Older typewriters may not have the 1 and! Keys. To make the exclamation point, press the dot key, backspace and then the apostrophe. To make the number 1, press the lowercase letter L key.
- Be careful while writing with a manual typewriter, or with an electric typewriter without self-correction, because you will not be able to correct mistakes.
- When the spacebar snaps in, carefully adjust it.
- Use tape or liquid white-out to correct mistakes. Wait for the concealer to dry completely before rewriting it, so as not to smudge the paper.
Warnings
- NEVER put a finger in the roller while you are inserting the sheet, as you could get hurt!
- Check the voltage of your electric typewriter before plugging it in. If the voltage is wrong (higher than that of the typewriter), you could burn it and make it unusable if it doesn't have a fuse.
- Once you are done using the electric typewriter, be sure to unplug it to avoid accidents.
