Step 1. Realize that it takes dedication, commitment and time to become a coach
For high school, you will need a diploma with teaching skills, and a degree in physical education. Here are some of the different levels of training:
- Juniors, such as local sports associations dedicated to different youth groups. These do not require higher education, but they do require you to pass an interview; sometimes they ask that you contribute to the costs of supporting the team.
- Coaching positions in middle and high schools are difficult to obtain, and will usually require you to fill a teaching position in the school, along with your duties as a coach. You may find that you need to start as a defense or attack coordinator before becoming a head coach.
- Coaching positions in college are practically impossible to get unless you've played football at least at the college level.
- Professional coaches work most of their lives, from playing in college and even at a competitive level, to working their way through the system.
Step 2. Plan for college enrollment and a degree in Physical Education, and if you are capable, play on a college team
Step 3. Study the sport of football, learning the quibbles and nuances of the game in depth
Study movies, sports history and the lives of gaming greats like Bear Bryant and Tom Landry, to name a few.
Step 4. Apply for any career openings available
Step 5. Be in favor of traveling or relocating, as managerial positions are often highly sought after
Step 6. Understand the need to start small… be it in small schools or a tiny staff, or even volunteer to establish yourself as a viable apprentice to head coach
Step 7. Be ready to sacrifice yourself - being a coach is a demanding profession - and to excel you will have to throw yourself headlong into football, in the search for new talent, in the call-ups and in the forecast of teams planned for the upcoming jobs for long hours
