Making your own lip gloss is quick and easy. Having acquired the basics, it is possible to make it in various colors and fragrances. The simplest and fastest recipe requires just two ingredients: coconut oil and pearly cake dye. If you want to make a more elaborate lip gloss, then you will need to add some beeswax and shea butter.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Using Coconut Oil and Pearly Cake Dye
Step 1. Pour 1 or 3 tablespoons (45ml or 15-40g) of coconut oil into a small bowl
You can use a cup, a small bowl or a plastic container. Since this lip gloss contains edible ingredients, it's a great DIY project for little girls.
If you don't have coconut oil, use regular or plant-based petroleum jelly instead. However, keep in mind that adding this ingredient will stop the lip gloss from being edible
Step 2. Add a sprinkle of pearl cake dye powder
You don't have to measure a specific amount - the more you use, the more intense the color will be. Remember that you can always add more at a later time. The pearl dye powder is sold in tubes or jars and can be found in stores that specialize in cake decorating products. Make sure the label says "pearl dye powder" instead of "color powder".
Don't use cake glitter, including gold or silver sprinkles and edible confetti. They will only weigh down the lip gloss, and also do not allow for a shimmering effect on the lips
Step 3. Blend the lip gloss until you get a homogeneous color
Mix the ingredients with a toothpick, stick, or teaspoon. Make sure you collect the mixture residue from the bottom and sides of the bowl.
Step 4. If desired, add larger amounts of pearl dye
If it seems to you that the color is too light, just pour in more pearlescent dye and mix again. Keep adding and mixing until you get the desired color.
If the color is too dark, add a little more coconut oil
Step 5. Pour the lip gloss into a plastic jar
For example, bead jars are recommended. You can also buy an empty jar specifically for lip balms. If you want to use the old jar of conditioner, be sure to wash it thoroughly first.
You should be able to fill 1 or 2 plastic jars, depending on their size
Step 6. Store your lip gloss in a cool, dry place
Coconut oil takes on a liquid consistency when the external temperature is above 24 ° C. If it's hot, keep it in the refrigerator.
Method 2 of 3: Using Beeswax, Coconut Oil and Shea Butter
Step 1. Mix the coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter
You will need 4 tablespoons (60ml or 50g) of coconut oil, 3 tablespoons (45ml or 40g) of beeswax flakes and 2 tablespoons (30g) of shea butter. Pour all the ingredients into a microwave-safe container, such as a glass measuring cup.
- If you don't have coconut oil, you can use sweet almond, grapeseed, olive, or other oils.
- Shea butter can be substituted for cocoa butter. However, keep in mind that it may change the color and flavor of the lip gloss.
Step 2. Melt the ingredients at 30 second intervals
Place the container in the microwave, let the ingredients heat for 30 seconds and mix them. Repeat the process until they have dissolved completely.
- Depending on the power of the microwave, it may be necessary to perform the procedure another 2 or 3 times.
- If you don't have a microwave or don't want to use it, place the container in a pot of boiling water (calculate about 3-5cm of water), then mix the ingredients as they melt.
Step 3. Let the mixture cool for 3 minutes
This step is very important. If you add essential oils right away, the heat will alter their properties. It may also weaken the flavor and fragrance of the oils.
Step 4. If desired, add 10 or 20 drops of essential oil
Start with 10 drops, then add more if needed. Don't be afraid to mix various flavors and create new ones, such as lemon and mint, lavender and peppermint or vanilla and orange. Be aware that some types of essential oils are more potent than others, so you may end up using smaller amounts.
- Read the label of the essential oil you plan to use to make sure it can be applied to the skin.
- If you can't find essential oils or prefer not to use them, opt for ½ bottle of flavored oil for cakes instead.
- If you want to make multiple types of lip gloss, first distribute the mixture among several jars, then pour the relevant flavors into each container.
Step 5. Add a pinch of mica or cosmetic glitter powder
Start by using a pinch of mica to get a colorful and iridescent lip gloss. If you want it to be shimmery, incorporate a pinch of powdered cosmetic glitter. Mix the ingredients, then add more mica / glitter until you get the desired result.
- Mica and cosmetic powder glitter can be found in numerous colors online and in stores that sell cosmetic raw materials.
- Don't use the glitter they sell in DIY stores, not even the extra-fine ones. They are not safe for the lips.
Step 6. Distribute the lip gloss between several jars
You can use a plastic jar designed for storing lip balms or beads. You can also buy lip balm tubes online. Proceed quickly, otherwise the mixture will harden.
Step 7. Let the mixture thicken before using it
It takes about 10 minutes for it to thicken. The specific times depend on the temperature of the kitchen. If it takes too long, you can speed up the process by putting it in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes. Once the mixture has thickened, close the jars by screwing the lid.
Method 3 of 3: Prepare Other Types of Glitter Lip Gloss
Step 1. To make a quick and easy lip gloss, mix a clear lip gloss and a handful of cosmetic glitter
Get a tube of clear lip gloss. Pour cosmetic glitter onto a clean plate. Dip the lip gloss applicator in the glitter, then slide it back into the tube. Pull it up and down repeatedly for several times in order to mix the glitter and lip gloss. At this point it will be ready to be used.
- For an even shinier lip gloss, dip the applicator in the glitter 2 or 3 times.
- The lip gloss does not have to be perfectly transparent: it can also be colored.
- Don't use the glitter they sell in DIY stores. Buy them online or at a cosmetics store.
Step 2. If you are in a hurry, dab some iridescent eyeshadow on the lip gloss
Apply clear or tinted lip gloss to your lips. Dip a finger in an iridescent eyeshadow and twist it inside. Gently tap your finger on the lips to make the glitter adhere. Repeat the procedure to evenly apply the eyeshadow over the entire surface of the lips.
- Eyeshadows are available in different finishes, from fine and pearly to grainy and glittery ones. Choose the one you prefer.
- You can also use cosmetic mica powder with this method, but cosmetic glitters are not suitable, as they are too heavy for lip gloss.
Step 3. Create a custom blend using professional cosmetics
Pour a few drops of a clear base for lip gloss into a cup. Add a pinch of cosmetic glitter or mica powder. Mix them, then pour them into a pastry bag. Squeeze the product into a clean, empty lip gloss tube.
- The transparent bases for lip glosses can be found online, on websites specialized in cosmetic raw materials.
- To make a pastry bag, first cut the tip of a plastic bag, then attach a specific nozzle to it for decorating cakes. Pour the lip gloss into the pocket with the help of a spoon.
Step 4. Melt some lip balm, then add cosmetic glitter
Take a lip balm and pour it into a microwave-safe container. Heat it in the oven for a few seconds until it becomes liquid. Add a pinch of cosmetic glitter, then pour the mixture into the conditioner jar. Let it harden before using it.
- If the conditioner doesn't harden fast enough, place it in the refrigerator or freezer for a few hours.
- If you want to get a tinted conditioner, add some lipstick.
Advice
- Make sure all containers are dry and clean, even if they are brand new.
- Coconut oil lip balm should last a long time. However, if it starts to look or smell strange, throw it away.
- Create cute lip balm labels using customizable stickers.
- Decorate the lip balm containers using stickers or rhinestones.
- If you are in a hurry and have nothing else available, apply an iridescent eyeshadow over a clear lip gloss.
Warnings
- Do not use lip glosses containing citrus essential oils before going out, as they can increase skin photosensitivity and the risk of burns.
- Don't use specific glitter for DIY projects. They do not have the same function as cosmetic glitter and are not safe for the skin or lips.
