When the heat and summer hit, we all become avid fans of watermelon. Here is a simple and fun method that allows your favorite fruit and liqueur to make friends.
Ingrediants
- Watermelon
- Liquor
Steps
Step 1. Use a small knife to gently carve the watermelon into a circular, conical 'cap'
It is best not to make a triangular or square shaped hole because it could cause the watermelon to break, rendering it useless for our purpose.
Step 2. Remove the cork from the watermelon using an ordinary corkscrew
Cut the part of the pulp attached to the cap and eat it, this is the right time to test the desired liqueur on the watermelon pulp, without contaminating the whole fruit.
Step 3. With a teaspoon, pull some of the pulp out of the circular hole to allow the liquids to flow into the fruit
Two or three spoonfuls should be enough. Eat this part of the pulp too, mix it with a different liqueur if you want to try a new combination.
Step 4. Take a long, thin object, such as a metal skewer, fine knife, or other utensil of your choice
Thread it into the watermelon several times, through the hole, from different angles.
Step 5. Skewer the pulp to create cavities where the liquor can flow easily
Step 6. It is important not to pierce the fruit to the opposite side, otherwise it will lose its 'hermetic' consistency letting its juices and liquor escape
Step 7. Pour about 240ml of your favorite drink into the watermelon
The amount of liquid absorbed by the pulp will vary according to the size of the fruit. Don't forget to choose a liqueur that suits your tastes and those of your guests.
Step 8. Add the liqueur gradually, little by little, letting it seep through the fruit
Vodka, rum, and bourbon whiskey are among the most popular ingredients used to 'stuff' watermelon. Nonetheless, don't be afraid to experiment and try something new.
Step 9. Tap the watermelon
Step 10. Place it in the refrigerator, with the opening facing up, for at least a couple of hours, to cool it and to allow the flavors to spread evenly
Step 11. Slice, serve and enjoy your watermelon
Step 12. Finished
Advice
- You can put the watermelon in the freezer to cool it faster, the alcohol content will prevent it from freezing.
- Prepare your watermelon several hours in advance before serving.
- Before slicing the watermelon, remove the 'cap', turn the opening downwards and let the excess liquor run out, which has not been absorbed by the pulp. In this way you will avoid large losses of liquid during cutting and you can enjoy the liquor with friends.
- If you want to carry the watermelon, don't forget to replace the cap.
- Make holes in the watermelon to be able to enjoy the liquids through a straw.
- Pour the liqueur into the watermelon using a funnel for tidier work.
Warnings
- Always drink responsibly.
- Don't drive after drinking.
