This article teaches you how to tame all the animals in Minecraft, such as horses, mules, ocelots, wolves and parrots. These steps work on all versions of the game, including PC, console, and Pocket Edition.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Taming Horses, Donkeys and Mules
Step 1. Find some items that are not essential but may be useful to you
You don't need the following tools to tame a horse, donkey, or mule, but they'll make it easier for you:
-
Saddle: the saddle allows you to control a horse after having tamed it; bareback you can ride but not control these animals. You can find saddles in chests in dungeons or in blacksmith houses in villages.
You can't build a saddle
-
Apples: having about 20 apples available allows you to feed the horse before trying to tame it; this will greatly increase the chances of succeeding in a couple of attempts.
Golden apples speed up the process even more
Step 2. Find a horse, donkey or mule
Their natural habitat is the Plains or Savannah biomes, but you can also find horses in NPC villages.
Step 3. Approach the animal without holding anything in your hand
Horses, donkeys and mules are not aggressive, but you must have empty hands to attempt to climb onto their backs.
To feed the animals, equip apples
Step 4. Select the animal
Click on it with the right mouse button (PC), use the left trigger (console), or press the "Mount" key when approaching the animal in PE. You will automatically get on the back.
If you want to feed the animal, select it with the apple until it is full, then select it again with nothing in hand
Step 5. Wait for the pet to throw you off
The horse, donkey or mule will hold you on the back for a few seconds before throwing you off and starting to walk away.
Step 6. Keep selecting the animal until you see red hearts appear
When he finally stops trying to unseat you, you should see red hearts appear, indicating that you have tamed him.
Step 7. Saddle up the horse, donkey or mule you have tamed
To saddle the animal, climb onto its back, press E, then move the saddle to the "Saddle" box of its inventory.
- In Minecraft PE, get on the animal's back, press ⋯, press the saddle, then press the "Saddle" icon.
- On the console edition of Minecraft, ride the animal, press Y or triangle, select the saddle, then select the "Saddle" icon in the upper left corner.
Method 2 of 4: Taming the Ocelots (Leopards)
Step 1. Get some raw fish
You will need a lot of raw (uncooked) fish to tame an ocelot:
- Build a fishing rod.
- Find a body of water.
- Equip your fishing rod.
- Select the body of water.
- Repeat until you have at least 10 fish.
Step 2. Find an ocelot
They usually live in the Jungle biome; they will appear on grass blocks near sea level (or higher).
Ocelots can escape if you frighten them, so in some cases you'll have to search for a long time before you find one
Step 3. Avoid running towards the ocelot
Approach cautiously as he is turned the other way, but when he turns towards you, stop immediately.
A good rule of thumb is to keep about 10 blocks of space between you and the ocelot
Step 4. Equip raw fish
Make sure you have it in hand before proceeding.
Step 5. Let the ocelot come towards you
A few seconds after equipping the fish, the animal should approach.
It is very important that you do not move at this stage
Step 6. Select the ocelot repeatedly until it turns into a cat
Once the pet is within range, select it with the right mouse button (PC), left trigger (console) or hold down on it until it becomes a cat. At this point, you have tamed the ocelot.
Method 3 of 4: Taming the Wolves
Step 1. Kill a skeleton to get a bone
You can find these monsters in all places with low light, for example in caves or at night.
- Be careful - skeletons can easily kill you if you are not well equipped with a sword.
- You may have to kill a lot of skeletons before you get a bone.
Step 2. Find a wolf
These animals mainly inhabit variants of the Taiga biome, but you can also look for them in forests in the Java and Legacy console editions of Minecraft.
Step 3. Equip the bone
Make sure you have it in your hand before continuing.
Step 4. Approach the wolf
Walk towards him with the bone equipped.
Wolves are not hostile by nature, but they will attack you if you provoke them
Step 5. Select the wolf until a collar appears around his neck
Select it with the right mouse button, the left trigger on the controller or press and hold the screen until the collar appears. A few attempts should be enough.
- If you accidentally hit the wolf in the process, it will attack you and you won't be able to tame it later.
- The wolf will tilt its head to one side and sit down when you have tamed it.
- Tamed wolves do not disappear from the world.
Method 4 of 4: Taming the Parrots
Step 1. Get at least 5 seeds
You can find them by breaking the tufts of grass, but you will only get them after many attempts. Once you have 5 seeds available, you can continue.
In the console edition of Minecraft the seeds are called "wheat seeds"
Step 2. Find a parrot
You can find them in the Jungle biome, just as you would expect. They are small, colorful and often fly short distances.
Step 3. Equip the seeds
Make sure you have them in hand before continuing.
Step 4. Approach the parrot
If it flies away before you catch it, just chase it; these birds do not fly very far and are not particularly fast.
Step 5. Select the parrot until you see hearts appear
Using seeds, select the bird with the right mouse button, left trigger or hold it down on the screen until red hearts appear around it. This indicates that you have successfully tamed it.
Step 6. Hold the parrot on the shoulder
As you walk "through" the animal, it will climb onto your shoulder, where it will stay until you sleep in a bed or mount a horse (or perform similar actions).
Advice
- You can also use a saddle with a pig, but you won't be able to control it if you don't use the carrot tied to the stick.
- Taming animals is a necessary prerequisite for mating them.
- Almost any domesticated animal will follow you.
- You can find armor for horses in dungeons, temples and fortresses of the Underworld. Unfortunately, you can't build them yourself.
- The parrots act as radar, copying the noises of the monsters, in order to inform you about the enemies in the vicinity.
- You can't build a saddle, but you can find one in chests.
