This article explains how to raise animals in Minecraft. To do this, you first need to find two specimens of the same species, then feed them their favorite food. You can do this on all versions of Minecraft, including computer, console, and Pocket Edition.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Taming the Animals
Step 1. Learn which animals you need to tame before starting
You can skip this part entirely if the animal you want to breed is not one of the following:
- Horse.
- Wolf.
- Ocelot.
- Lama.
Step 2. Get the materials needed to tame the animal
You need the following items for the respective animals:
- Horse: no objects, but your hand must be empty.
- Wolf: a bone.
- Ocelot: a raw fish of any kind (must be raw salmon or raw fish in Minecraft PE).
- Lama: no material, but your hand must be empty.
Step 3. Equip the item to tame the animal
If you are trying to tame a horse or llama, make sure you have nothing in your hand by selecting an empty box in the equipment bar.
Step 4. Select the animal while holding the indicated object
Press on it with your finger, right mouse button, or left trigger while your character is facing it.
- If you want to tame a horse or a llama, selecting the animal will get you on its back. Keep trying to ride him until you see hearts appear above his head.
- If you attempt to tame an ocelot, approach about 10 blocks from it, then wait for it to come towards you before selecting it.
Step 5. Wait for hearts to appear above the animal's head
You have to keep selecting it until it happens; when you see red hearts appear, you have tamed it.
Step 6. Repeat with another animal of the same type
Since you need two to get them to mate, you need to tame another animal using the same method before you can continue.
Part 2 of 2: Raising the Animals
Step 1. Find two animals you want to mate
Skip this step if you have just tamed them.
You cannot breed two animals of different species (for example a pig and a wolf)
Step 2. Build an enclosure by leaving an access point
You can use a fence for this purpose, or a two-block high wall. Make sure there is enough space inside for your pets to move.
Step 3. Equip the pets' favorite food
Depending on the species you want to attract, you need to hold one of the following foods in your hand:
- Horse: golden apple or golden carrot. You can create one by placing an apple or carrot in the center of the crafting table, then surrounding it with gold bars in all remaining squares.
- Sheep: wheat.
- Cow or Mooshroom: wheat.
- Pig: carrots, potatoes or beets.
- Hens: seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon or beet seeds.
- Wolf (dog): all the meats you can find. Wolves need to be at their best to reproduce.
- Ocelot (cat): any fish.
- Rabbit: dandelion, carrots or golden carrots.
- Lama: hay bale.
Step 4. Wait for the animals to start following you
As soon as you equip their favorite food, they should turn towards you and stare at you. At this point you can lure them into the enclosure.
Step 5. Back up to the fence
The animals will follow you as long as you have their favorite food equipped.
Pull back completely inside the enclosure so the animals don't get stuck too close to the entrance
Step 6. Feed both animals
Always keeping the food equipped, select the two specimens that are to mate. You should see hearts appear above their heads.
If you feed a wolf and no hearts appear, it means he is not at full health. Keep feeding it until you see the hearts, then repeat with the other wolf
Step 7. Exit the fence and close the gate
Once the animals start looking at each other, quickly get out of the enclosure and close it. That way they won't be able to escape once the puppy is born.
Step 8. Wait for the puppy to appear
Approximately 3 seconds will pass from the start of pairing.
Advice
- If you have chicken eggs, you can throw them on the ground to give birth to the chicks.
- If you can't find the animals, switch to creative mode and have them appear with an egg!
