For content creators, verifying your account on YouTube offers numerous benefits, including removing the limit that prevents you from uploading videos longer than 15 minutes, having the ability to insert links to external websites in the notes, make direct and create customized video previews. Verification must be done by telephone, by means of a text message or a call. Whichever mode you choose, you will be provided with a 6-digit code to enter on a specific page. The process takes a few minutes and allows you to immediately access the additional functions provided for verified accounts.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Verify the Account
Step 1. Open the verification page in your browser
You will be prompted to select a country and verification method.
If you are not signed in to YouTube, you will be prompted to do so before proceeding
Step 2. Select a country from the drop-down menu
Step 3. Decide whether to receive the verification code via SMS or voice message
Both methods allow you to receive a 6-digit code to enter on this page.
In some countries it is not possible to receive SMS from Google: in this case you must opt for verification by voice message
Step 4. Enter your phone number
Step 5. Click on "Submit"
You will receive a verification code via SMS or voice message, depending on the method you have chosen.
- To receive the message or phone call, you only need to wait a few seconds. If you don't receive anything within a reasonable amount of time, you can request another code.
- Only 2 accounts per year can be verified with the same phone number. Exceeded this limit an error message appears.
Step 6. Enter the 6-digit code and click "Submit"
A message will appear to confirm that the verification was successful.
Part 2 of 2: Using New Features and Troubleshoot
Step 1. Open the function page in your browser
It will show you the privileges enjoyed by your account. The functions that were not active before the check will be marked with the word "Enabled".
The verification status appears under the username
Step 2. Monitor the copyright and community policy status
These states are found under the username. After 3 infringements the score is lowered and you risk losing access to some benefits (such as uploading longer videos or directing), depending on the non-compliance.
- If the status is green and has a smiley face, then the score is normal and you have never broken the rules.
- If you are having trouble taking advantage of the new features, check the status to see if they are due to any infringements.
Step 3. Learn about external annotations, which can be added to videos to add information or links within the video
Annotations can link to external websites or promote monetization.
Step 4. Learn about custom thumbnails
The thumbnail is the preview of the video that users see while browsing. You can customize it while uploading the video or by adding it to an already published video. In the latter case, click on "Video manager", then on "Edit" and "Customize thumbnail".
Step 5. Find out about live broadcasts
Although verifying your account allows you to broadcast live, you still need to activate the function in the appropriate page by clicking on "Activate" in the "Live streaming" box. Once activated, you will be able to stream live on YouTube.
