Blush is often overshadowed when it comes to makeup, but its benefits shouldn't be underestimated. The right blush adds color to your cheeks, instantly giving you a younger, healthier and more beautiful look. However, many women don't know what type of blush to use and how to apply it. Start with the first step to know everything you need for a perfect blush.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Choosing a Blush
Step 1. Select a color that matches your skin tone
It is important to choose a blush that comes close to your natural color.
- The color you choose should be very similar to the color your cheeks take when you blush. A color that doesn't match your skin tone will give a faux and even tacky effect.
- A good trick for determining your natural color is to clench your fist for about 10 seconds. The color that appears on the knuckles will be the ideal blush color!
- In general, light pink blushes that mimic natural blush are ideal for fair skin. For a stronger look, peach and tan work well.
- For more yellowish skin tones, orange and strawberry pink illuminate the skin giving a fresh touch.
- For darker tones, more vibrant colors are fine too; for example: orange, pink and red.
Step 2. Decide on the type of blush
There are a multitude of formulations on the market, including powder, cream, gel and liquid blushes. The best choice depends on your skin type and preferences.
- The powder blush is ideal for oily to combination skin. It is also suitable for warmer temperatures because it does not melt.
- Cream blush is great for drier skin because it is moisturizing. It is also ideal for mature skin because it does not highlight small wrinkles and signs like the powder one.
- Liquid and gel blushes are fantastic for a long-lasting and precise application.
Step 3. Buy brushes or sponges for the application
The best tool to apply blush depends on the type of blush you use:
- Powder blushes are easier to apply with an angled or large brush.
- Cream blushes are easier to apply directly with your fingers, or with medium flat brushes.
- Liquid or gel blushes are best applied with your fingers, or with synthetic make-up sponges.
Part 2 of 2: Applying the Blush
Step 1. Choose a well-lit place
It is important that the room where you apply your blush is well lit, otherwise you may underestimate the amount of blush you have applied. Natural light is ideal, but a well-lit bathroom or a mirror with light will also be fine.
Step 2. Apply primer and foundation first
Your blush should be applied after the primer and foundation. The primer helps neutralize redness and will make makeup last longer; the foundation evens out the skin for a flawless effect.
Step 3. Apply the blush according to the shape of your face
Although traditionally the blush is applied to the top of the cheeks, this method may not be ideal for everyone. Take into account the shape of your face before application:
-
Round faces:
To streamline a round face, apply the blush on the cheekbones (which you can identify by making your mouth like a fish) and spread outwards and upwards, towards the temples.
-
Long faces:
To soften a long face, apply the blush just below the tops of the cheeks (the roundest parts), but don't spread it over.
-
Heart-shaped faces:
To emphasize this face shape, apply the blush under the top of the cheeks and blend in the direction of the hairline.
-
Square faces:
To soften this face shape, apply the blush over the cheeks, about 3 cm from the sides of the nose.
-
Oval faces:
in this case, it is better to apply the blush on the top of the cheeks and blend it well around the sides. To locate the top of the cheeks, just smile!
Step 4. Use the right technique
The technique varies depending on the type of blush and tool you use.
-
Powder blush:
Gently dip the brush into the blush, then tap the handle to remove excess product. Make circular motions to apply the blush to your cheeks.
-
Cream blush:
Dab the flat brush or your fingers into the blush and gently apply to the areas of the cheek you want to color. Then, make circular movements to blend the cream, from the outside to the inside of the cheeks.
-
Liquid or gel:
Use your fingers to apply two points (no more) of the liquid or gel on the cheekbones, then use your ring finger, or a synthetic sponge to blend the product with small taps.
Step 5. Learn the amount of blush to apply
Many women are afraid of overdoing it, so they apply a small amount of blush.
- However, the blush should be noted - it doesn't have to be as invisible as the foundation.
- Remember that it is easier to add blush than to remove it. Then, apply the blush a little at a time, adding layers until the color is one tone and two darker than the effect you consider natural.
- If you accidentally apply too much blush, use a dry washcloth to remove excess color.
Step 6. To finish, apply a layer of translucent face powder
Put translucent face powder on your hands and apply to your face.
- Use a small brush to apply a little powder under the outer corners of the eyes; then, blend the upper sides of the blush with circular movements.
- This way, your cheekbones will be accentuated and the blush will give a more natural look.
Step 7. Understand the difference between blush and bronzer
Many people are confused as to distinguish the two products and their use.
- The blush is used to add a touch of color and vitality to the cheeks, imitating the natural blush; the earth is used for a healthy and tanned effect on the whole face.
- To apply the bronzer, use a brush to blend a thin layer on the areas of the face that generally tan the most - the forehead, cheeks, chin and bridge of the nose.
