Need to get rid of an embarrassing recent search that pops up every time you click on Safari's address bar? You can quickly clear all recent searches, no matter what version of Safari you are using. If you have an iOS device, you can do this by deleting all browser history.
Note: Search history is different from browsing history. The first contains all the words you entered in the search bar, while the other is made up of all the web pages you have visited. To delete your browsing history, click here.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Mac
Step 1. Open Safari
You can delete recent searches from within the browser.
Step 2. Click on the address bar
If you are using an older version of Safari, with the separate search bar, click on the latter instead.
Step 3. Delete the URL currently appearing in the bar
This way, recent searches should appear.
Step 4. Click on "Delete Recent Searches" at the bottom of the list
This way, you only delete recent searches. If you need to clear all browsing history, you need to follow a different method
Step 5. Delete a single entry
If you are interested in removing only one search from your history, you can do so from the Favorites window.
- Click the Favorites button or press ⌥ Opt + ⌘ Cmd + 2.
- Search for the entry to remove.
- Select it and press Delete or right click and press "Delete".
Method 2 of 2: iOS
Step 1. Open Settings
The only way to clear your search history in the iOS version of Safari is to delete all your browsing history.
Step 2. Click on "Safari"
You will see this entry under "Maps".
Step 3. Scroll down and hit "Clear Website History and Data"
You will be asked to confirm by pressing "Cancel".
