This guide describes how to download a YouTube video and view it offline on your iPad. Using a third-party app to download movies is a violation of the terms of YouTube's user license agreement and may violate copyright laws, so most apps created for this purpose are removed from the App Store after some time.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using YouTube Red
Step 1. Open the YouTube app
It has a white icon, with a white triangle surrounded by a red rectangle.
Step 2. Press your Google profile picture
You will find it in the upper right corner of the window.
If you are not signed in, press the red and white silhouette icon in the upper right corner of the screen, then press LOGIN and enter your Google username and password.
Step 3. Press Get YouTube Red
You will find the button in the top section of the menu.
- YouTube Red is a paid subscription service that allows you to download videos and view them online without violating YouTube's license agreement.
- Streaming is a technology that allows you to watch video content without owning a copy; like watching television, but through an internet connection. Streaming protects the rights of video creators.
- Downloaded videos take up space on your iPad but can be viewed without an internet connection. If you have not purchased or recorded the video and you do not have permission from the creator, it is likely that owning a copy of the video is a violation of copyright laws. In most cases, downloading a video from YouTube is a violation of the end user license agreement.
Step 4. Press TRY IT FOR FREE
It is a blue button on the right side of the screen.
- You can take advantage of a 30-day trial period at the start of your subscription.
- You can cancel your subscription at any time from the YouTube settings menu.
Step 5. Enter your password
Enter the passkey linked to your Apple ID to confirm the purchase.
Step 6. Press Ok
Step 7. Press the search icon
It looks like a magnifying glass and is located in the upper right corner of the window.
Step 8. Enter your search terms
Type the title or description of the video you are looking for in the bar at the top of the window.
Step 9. Press ⋮
You will find the button next to the title of the video you want to download.
Step 10. Press Save offline
The item is in the center of the menu.
Step 11. Select the quality
According to the resolution of the original video, you can choose the download quality.

Step 12. Press OK
The movie will be downloaded to the iPad memory.
Step 13. Press Library
The icon for this button looks like a folder and is located at the bottom of the screen.
Step 14. Press Video offline
You will find the button in the left pane of the screen, in the "Available offline" section.
- The downloaded videos will be displayed in the right pane.
- Press a video to start playing.
Method 2 of 2: Using Documents 5
Step 1. Open the App Store
The store icon is blue, with a white "A" inside a circle.
Step 2. Search for Documents 5
Click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the App Store, then type "Documents 5" in the text field at the top of the screen.
Step 3. Press Documents 5
You'll see the app name appear below the text field.
Step 4. Press Get
This button is located to the right of the app.
The button will change to Install; press it again to install the app on your device.
Step 5. Press the Home button
This is the round button on the iPad screen.
Step 6. Open the YouTube app
Its icon has a white background and contains a red rectangle surrounding a white triangle.
Step 7. Search for a video
Type the title or description of the movie in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 8. Hit a video
This will select the movie you want to download.
Step 9. Press the Share button
It is located below the video section and looks like a curved arrow pointing up and to the right.
Step 10. Press Copy Link
Look for the button in the last menu items.
Step 11. Press the Home button
This is the round button on the iPad screen.
Step 12. Open Documents 5
The app icon is one D. brown on white background.
Step 13. Press Browser
This button is in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 14. Visit SaveFrom.net website
Type "savefrom.net" in the search bar at the top of the browser, then press Enter.
Step 15. Press and hold the Just Insert a Link item
You will find it just below the search bar.
Step 16. Press Paste
This will copy the YouTube link into the text field.
Step 17. Press>
This is the blue button to the right of the link you entered.
Step 18. Select the video quality
Press the text to the right of the green "Download" button that appears after entering the link. This will open the menu with the available qualities and formats. Press on an item to select it.
Usually, MP4 is the most suitable format for iPad
Step 19. Press Download
This will open a dialog where you can rename the file if you wish.
Step 20. Press Done
This is the blue button in the upper right corner of the dialog box.
Step 21. Press ≡
You will find the button in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 22. Press Documents, in the upper left corner of the screen
Step 23. Press Downloads
The icon for this button looks like a folder and is located in the right pane of the screen.
Step 24. Press and hold the video
Step 25. Drag the movie to the top left
Bring it to the words "Drag Here" and hold it steady until you see the folder icon appear on the screen.
Step 26. Drag the video to the "Photos" folder, then lift your finger from the screen
The folder icon contains the rainbow flower from the Pictures app.
Step 27. Press the Home button
This is the round button on the iPad screen.
Step 28. Open Images
The app icon is white, with a rainbow flower.
Step 29. Press All Images
This album should be in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 30. Hit the video
It should be the last item, at the bottom of the preview screen. This will open the video and play it thanks to the images app of the iPad.
