Making the Santa hat is easy and will be better than what you buy at the supermarket. This article provides two possible methods for making your own Christmas cap.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use a Template
Step 1. Put together what you need
Find a list under "Things You Will Need".
Step 2. Create the pattern for the cap
Use a sturdy piece of paper to prevent tearing. Draw a triangle on the paper. The best sizes are as follows:
- Kids Santa Hat: Draw a base height and width of 33cm
- Adult Santa Hats: Draw a base width and height of 35cm
- Very large hat: better take your measurements first!
Step 3. At the base of the hat draw an arc that crosses the entire magnitude of the equilateral triangle
To do this, attach a pencil to a piece of string and attach the other end to the top of the triangle. The pencil should just touch the base of the triangle. Simply draw by holding the string taut on the paper and you will create a bow.
Step 4. Cut out the template from the paper
Step 5. Fold the felt
Step 6. Attach the pattern to the felt
Use pins to hold it in place. Hold one end of the pattern along the folded portion of the felt.
You can double the felt and cut both pieces in one go or cut two separate ones. Do what you find easier
Step 7. Cut out the shape from the felt
Step 8. Sew the sides together
They are the straight ones and not the curved ones that instead form the base. If you don't want to sew them together, you can glue them using a suitable felt glue.
- If you are cutting a folded piece of fabric, you will only need to sew or glue along one side.
- If you make two separate, you will need to attach two sides.
- If using glue, let it dry before continuing.
Step 9. Turn the hat inside out
It will look like a cone.
Step 10. Add the base part
You have more choices depending on the final look you prefer:
- Cut out a band that is at least 5 cm wide and enough to go around the entire base.
- Cut a band of furry fabric of the same size. Furry fabric may be more difficult to work with but the result can be really great.
Step 11. Sew or glue the white border around the base of the hat
Step 12. Finish it off by sewing or gluing a pompom, tassel, tree ball or other onto the tip of the cap
If you stick it, let it dry before wearing it.
Step 13. Try it
It is now ready to wear.
Method 2 of 2: Measure with a cord
Step 1. Put together what you need
Find a list under "Things You Will Need".
The color doesn't have to be white and red. You can choose others like green and blue. Make it festive
Step 2. Fold the material
With the felt spread out, make a cone-shaped crease. Bring the top corner to the bottom right corner. Pin the edges together.
Step 3. Turn the material over
The stapled edges will be to your left instead of to the right. Fold them to the right. Fold into a cylinder.
Step 4. Cut the material
Start where the corner meets the folded felt. It should be below the apex of the cone by about 60%.
You will cut four layers in total, from right to left corner
Step 5. Take the string and measure where you want the cap to rest on your head
Then take the felt and measure the length from the bottom starting from the lower left corner and mark it.
Step 6. Cut some more
Hold the white fur against the red felt and trace the shape of the red material over the white one. Cut approximately 15cm in height, starting 2.5cm below the drawn line.
Step 7. Sew
Match the materials, sew the edges, attach the white fur to the red felt.
Step 8. Turn the cap over and fold the white over the red so that it shows
Pin inside and sew. Check that the edges are lined up and sewn in pairs, from the tip of the cap to the base to the bottom.
Step 9. Add the finishing touches
Use scissors to finish. Turn the cap back.
- Be creative! Customize the cap according to the person by adding the name. A fun idea is to let the children decorate it with non-toxic colors and glitter glue.
- Check that the cap is completely dry before putting it on, it will take a while.
Advice
- The type of felt or fabric chosen will affect the final appearance of the Santa hat. The thinner the felt, the more likely it is to sag; the thicker it is, the more straight it will stay.
- Very soft fabric like velvet can create a nice floppy effect but not everyone likes it and is more suitable for elegant Santas.
