A witch costume is ideal to wear for Halloween. If this year you are thinking about dressing up as a witch, or having your little girl wear this costume, maybe you are interested in learning how to make an important costume accessory yourself, to save money or just to have fun. Making a witch hat with your own hands will give you the ability to customize it to be just the way you want it. You don't even need to know how to sew!
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Making the Cone of the Hat
Step 1. Get the materials
Making a witch hat is easy and requires few materials. Before starting, get:
- Black foam sheets.
- String.
- Scissors.
- Wire.
- Scotch tape.
- Tape or tape.
- A small ostrich feather boa or a strip of faux fur.
- Decorations like plastic spiders, buttons and bows.
Step 2. Measure and cut the foam into a cone shape
Take the string and hold one end of it at the corner of the foam sheet. Then tie the string to the end of the pencil and rotate it, stretching the string, for a few tens of centimeters. It is the same mechanism as the compass. With the string and the pencil draw the contours of the base of the cone (the height of the cone is at your discretion).
- When you have finished tracing the curved line that forms the outline for the base of the cone, cut with scissors along this line. Eventually you should end up with a triangular piece of foam rubber with a circular base.
- You can also use a precision cutter to get smoother edges, but it's not essential.
Step 3. Cut the wire
Now you need a piece of wire that is a little shorter than the top of the cone. To determine the length you can take the measurements of the cone from the base to the top, or simply stretch the thread along the cone and cut it.
Step 4. Attach the iron wire to the center of the cone with masking tape
Lay the piece of yarn along the middle axis of the cone, as if you are dividing it in half. One end must be at the top of the cone, the other at the base. Then take a piece of tape a little longer than the wire and attach it to the cone lengthwise.
- Make sure there is a small gap between the end of the thread and the edge of the cone, otherwise it may protrude from the tip of the hat or prick you in the head while wearing it.
- After attaching the wire to the cone, cut off the excess tape. There should be no adhesive tape sticking out of the edge of the cone.
Step 5. At one edge, put more masking tape
At one of the edges put a double layer of adhesive tape to secure the cone well. Take a piece of masking tape and attach it to the flat edge of the cone, then apply a second strip that protrudes a few inches.
- Then fold one edge of the cone to match the other and secure it with the sticky tape sticking out.
- As you pin the edges to each other, check that both the wire and duct tape are not sticking out of the cone.
Part 2 of 3: Making the Hat Brim
Step 1. Measure the brim and cut it
To make the hat brim, you need to take another sheet of foam rubber and hold one end of the string in the center of the sheet. With the other hand he then grabs the pencil tied to the other end of the string and draws a circumference. The latter will form the brim of the hat, so make sure it's wide enough.
After measuring the brim, cut along the edges of the circumference. Make sure the angle of the cut is as even as possible, otherwise the jagged edges will show
Step 2. To flatten the brim use a hot air gun or hair dryer
When you're done cutting out the brim, put it back on the table and flatten any curved edges with a hot air gun or blow dryer. If the brim is already flat enough, you can skip this step.
You can also use a couple of very heavy books for this, put them on the foam to gain weight and leave them there for a few hours or overnight
Step 3. Cut out the center of the brim
Fold the brim in half, making sure the edges match. Start cutting in the center and work your way out. Continue cutting until you create a small circle in the center of the brim. Then cut four slots along the inside edges of the circle to increase flexibility.
Keep in mind that the inner circle must be wide enough to fit well on the head, but not too much, otherwise it risks being too wide
Step 4. Experiment to make sure the brim fits your size
Put it on before continuing with work to make sure it fits you. If it's too tight, you can still fix it. If it is too loose, you will need to make another one using a new sheet of foam rubber.
Part 3 of 3: Complete the Hat
Step 1. Cover the junction of the edges of the cone with tape or tape
Before gluing the cone to the brim, you can cover the junction of the edges with black tape. To attach the ribbon to the cone, use a hot glue gun.
- Before gluing the tape to the cone, check that the gun has warmed up and is ready for use.
- While you apply the hot glue, hold the gun close to the foam. Otherwise, the glue may partially dry out before bonding is complete.
Step 2. Glue the cone to the brim
You also need hot glue to glue the cone to the brim. To do this, apply a layer of hot glue to the base of the cone, which you will then press on the inside edge of the hat brim.
- As you secure it, make sure the cone is well centered on the brim.
- If you also want to decorate your hat, you can apply a small ostrich feather boa or a strip of faux fur where the cone and brim join. Again, use hot glue to glue the decoration to the base of the cone.
Step 3. Bend the tip of the cone as desired
Once the hat is complete, when the glue has dried, you can give the cone the shape you prefer by bending it slightly. The wire inside the cone will allow you to give it a slanted or flattened shape.
Try folding the cone in two or three to give it a worn look
Step 4. Add more refinements
You can further enrich your witch hat with other accessories, such as plastic spiders, bows and buttons. Choose accessories that enhance the effect of your costume.
